FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The following questions were asked during the Wheelhouse training sessions.

  1. Question: How does the anti-drift brake work and is it adjustable?

Answer: The Proprietary Wheelhouse anti-drift brake comes standard on all MA systems configured with floorless rail. It is a friction disk brake mounted to one of the wheel sections on a carriage. It works by adding friction to the line shaft. The amount of friction that is added to the shaft is adjustable. It should be adjusted with the system loaded with media so that just enough friction is added to prevent the carriage from drifting. The Wheelhouse anti-drift brake has been tested to over 50,000 cycles. The springs in the mechanism provide consistent friction over the life of the system without regular adjustments being required.

  1. Question: Will static platforms be made available for meeting bid specifications?

Answer: There are no plans to add static platforms to the Wheelhouse offering.

  1. Question: What is the true load capacity for the Wheelhouse product?

Answer: The maximum load capacity for all Wheelhouse carriages is 750 lb/ft. There are no exceptions.

  1. Question: What types of post anchoring devices are we using with static shelving?

Answer: Static 4-Post and Case-Type shelving used in a Wheelhouse system should be applied in the same manner as any other static 4-Post and Case-Type shelving applications including the anchoring method.

  1. Question: Does the bottom shelf have a tendency to not sit flush on the side rail supports because of the reinforcements and how they fit into the side rails?

Answer: The bottom shelf rests on the shelf reinforcements. When loaded, the shelf will deflect slightly so that it is supported by both the reinforcements and the side profiles.

  1. Question: What is the maximum allowable height of the uprights?

Answer: 4-Post and Case-Type shelving uprights up to 98 ¾” can be ordered with Wheelhouse without consulting factory. Heights above 98 ¾” require Request for Special Product. Anti-Tip requirements must be followed in all applications.

  1. Question: Can we include an anti-drift mechanism on the manual systems?

Answer: There are no plans to add an anti-drift mechanism to manual Wheelhouse systems at this time.

  1. Question: Does the floorless rail have to be anchored or will the system weight keep it in place?

Answer: Both of the Wheelhouse floorless rail types must always be anchored. The anchors are what hold the steel rail bar to the aluminum extrusion and also provide the resistance to the lateral loads imposed by the carriage guidance system. See the Floorless Rail TechData for more information.

  1. Question: Can we devise a way to turn the wheels sideways and use a similar configuration of components for bi-file?

Answer: There are no plans to add a lateral mobile system to the Wheelhouse product offering at this time.

  1. Question: When will a back-to-back shelving compatible option be available?

Answer: Currently the plan is to launch back-to-back shelving compatibility in December of 2009.

  1. Question: When will a modular floor option be available?

Answer: A modular floor option for Wheelhouse is under consideration for development. No timeline has been set at this time.

  1. Question: Can the Wheelhouse carriages be longer than 16 ft when using leveled B-rail? If so how long?

Answer: In some cases it may be possible to apply MA carriages only on leveled B-rail up to 20 ft long. The load on the carriages must be 550 lb/ft or less. Contact your AC Support Representative as each of these applications must be reviewed by engineering.

  1. Question: Can the components be ordered in any Spacesaver colors?

Answer: The standard color offerings for mobile and 4-Post shelving also apply to Wheelhouse systems.

  1. Question: Can the standard 1000# carriages be used on the floorless rail?

Answer: No. There are two main issues with this application. 1) The wheel loads imposed by the 1000 lb/ft and wider rail centers exceed the capacity of the floorless rails. 2) The rigid welded carriages will not conform to the imperfections in an unleveled rail causing wheels to lift off of the rail thereby compromising drive and guidance capability.

  1. Question: Is there any way to incorporate a bracket for recess mounting Weapons racks?

Answer: Not at this time.

  1. Question: When will the steel end panels be ready?

Answer: Steel end-panels are still in development. Contact your AC Support Representative if you have an immediate need.

  1. Question: What temperature can this product withstand for cold storage?

Answer: No lower than 32°F. For applications at temperatures lower than these values please contact your AC Support Representative.

  1. Question: How out of level can the floor be in order to use the floorless rail?

Answer: See the first page of the Wheelhouse Planning Guide for the floorless rail levelness specs.

  1. Are the shims for the floorless rail supplied by Spacesaver? How are they installed?

Answer: Shims for the Wheelhouse Floorless rails will be supplied by Spacesaver when shimmed floorless rails (FL-S or FLAT-S) are applied to a Configura Wheelhouse drawing. The shims are stackable and are intended to be used to ‘spot’ level floorless rail so that it can meet the floorless rail levelness specification outlined in the Planning Guide. For more detailed information regarding shimming the floorless rails see the Installation Manual.

  1. Question: Can the floorless rails be fully grouted if need be? If so what are the height restrictions with grout?

Answer: The floorless rails are not designed to be fully grouted. However, it is technically possible. The rails would first need to be properly shimmed according the instructions in the Installation Manual. Grout could be then be applied between the shims. Keep in mind that a minimum of ¼” of grout is required for the grout to be effective.
