Mission Statement

The Lake Roosevelt Preschool provides a developmentally appropriate integrated program. It serves typical and special needs students to gain needed skills in order to be successful in kindergarten and beyond.

Program Philosophy

The Lake Roosevelt Preschool program offers a variety of learning experiences which provide for the unique needs and abilities of our preschool and high school students. Our integrated program strives to promote a positive image of self and others. Multi-sensory play activities allow the children to learn about themselves and their environment at their own developmental level and within an appropriate preschool climate.

The program philosophy consists of the following basic premises:

1. Young children learn by doing. Children learn about the physical and social worlds through playful interaction with objects and people. Play requires students to engage in tasks that develop thinking, language, small muscle, large muscle, problem-solving, social and pre-academic skills.

2. For children to understand and remember what they have learned the information must be meaningful to the child. Children are provided concrete learning activities with materials and people relevant to their own experiences.

3. The process, or how a child learns, is as important as the product, or what the child learns.

4. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and discovery. Children choose many of their own activities from the variety of learning areas provided. Children are encouraged to make choices and then act upon those choices, with the preschool workers facilitating their learning.

5. No two children are at exactly the same developmental level. Different levels of ability and development are expected and accepted.

The curriculum taught is called Creative Curriculum. New this year in addition to Creative Curriculum, is a reading curriculum called CKLA Preschool (Core Knowledge Language Arts). This is a comprehensive English language arts curriculum designed to give preschool age children foundational language and literacy skills. Engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons are taught daily integrating instruction into activities that are common in quality preschool classrooms.

Preschool Retention Policy

It is the belief of the Lake Roosevelt Preschool staff that students should start kindergarten when they are eligible. Children benefit from being around peers with age appropriate communication, social, and academic skills. The Preschool team would only consider having a child attend Lake Roosevelt preschool an extra year in very specific circumstances.

Our Day At Preschool

Our classes follow thematic units using Creative Curriculum and CKLA.

Both classes have a center time where children are allowed to choose from various activities. Some of the centers include home living, art, science, writing, blocks and sensory. They are free to move about the room to explore materials, gather information, interact with peers and solve problems with staff guidance and support. At the end of center time the children cooperatively clean up.

Children in each class have a large group experience where we teach curriculum, sing songs, listen to stories, have show and tell, learn finger plays, work on turn taking and listening skills.

All classes have small group instruction applying fine motor skills and following directions.

Each class has gross motor activities where students have the opportunity to use large muscles, play different games, learn to follow directions and just have fun.

Lake Roosevelt Preschool Illness Policy

Guidelines for excluding children with illness

To ensure the health of our students and staff, it is Grand Coulee Dam S.D. Preschool's policy that children must stay home if they exhibit the following symptoms or conditions. Children should be excluded from attending preschool for the following reasons (this list covers the most common illnesses, but is not inclusive of all reasons for exclusion):

  1. Illness that prevents a child from participating comfortably in preschool activities.
  2. Illness that results in a greater need for care than our staff can provide without compromising the health and safety of other children.
  3. Unusual behavior: a child is irritable or less active than usual; cries more than usual or just seems to not be feeling well; exhibits loss of appetite or general discomfort.
  4. Fever of 99.5 degrees and above.
  5. Diarrhea: the child may return to Preschool after 24 hours of a firm stool.
  6. Vomiting.
  7. Excessive coughing.
  8. Mouth sores.
  9. Rash: unless a physician has determined it is not contagious.
  10. Purulent conjunctivitis: (defined as pink or red conjunctiva with white or yellow eye discharge) until the child has been on antibiotics for 24 hours.
  11. Strep throat: until 24 hours after treatment has begun and the child is feeling well.
  12. Head lice: until after treatment and nits are removed.
  13. Scabies: until 24 hours after treatment has begun.
  14. Chickenpox: until all lesions have dried and crusted (usually 6 days).

We will need to send children home (or call an emergency contact) when they exhibit any of the above symptoms. Children must remain home for 24 hours without symptoms before returning to school. In the case of a suspected contagious disease or continuing symptoms, a doctor's note is required before your child is permitted to return to school. As soon as your doctor determines that your child has a communicable disease, please inform the Preschool immediately.

Excluded children may return when:

  1. They are free of fever, vomiting and diarrhea for a full 24 hours.
  2. They have been treated with an antibiotic for 24 hours.
  3. They are able to participate comfortably in all usual preschool activities, including outdoor time.

Pick-Up And Drop-Off Procedures

Preschool students enter the building through the main Lake Roosevelt Elementary School entrance.

Children should not arrive at preschool more than 5 minutes before the start of each session and need to be picked-up promptly at the end of each preschool session. Please have only quiet voices in our school hallways.

If you wish to visit the preschool, please check in at the Lake Roosevelt Elementary office.
