Dress Code

The following is based on the Middle School Student Code of Conduct and Smithfield Middle Policies.

  • BISD prohibits Gothic attire, pictures, emblems, clothing or writing on clothing that is offensive, suggestive or obscene, that depict the occult, that represent gang membership, that advertise tobacco products, alcoholic beverages or any clothing or grooming that the principal expects to cause a disruption, or deems offensive.
  • Pants and shorts must be worn at the waist (not hips-unless they are made that way). No sagging. All pants and shorts are to be without holes above the knee. Lounge or pajama pants are not appropriate for school.
  • All students are expected to wear clothing and undergarments in keeping with their gender. Undergarments should be covered.
  • Tank tops, tank top dresses, revealing tops, fishnet shirts, see-through clothing, strapless, backless or spaghetti-type straps are prohibited unless layered over a sleeved garment.
  • Shorts, dresses and skirts should be no higher than 4” above the knee in length.
  • Form-fitting pants, such as leggings, must be covered with a top or skirt reaching no higher than 4” above the knee.
  • Shorts, skirts and dresses are to be neatly hemmed. Cutoffs of any kind are prohibited. This includes cutoff sweatpants and shredded garments. Wind shorts and any type of form fitting (skin tight) shorts are not allowed.
  • Hats (of all types) or head coverings (scarves, bandanas) are not to be worn or brought to school. Hoodies are not to cover the head unless it is outside and it is cold.
  • Heavy chains or spiked jewelry are prohibited.
  • Pierced body ornaments are restricted to the ear and appropriate for school.
  • All students must wear appropriate footwear.
  • Hairstyles and colors that, in the opinion of the school principal, cause a health/safety hazard or possible disruption in the classroom shall not be permitted.

It will save a lot of time and stress if parents will make sure their students follow this dress code so that proper clothing does not have to be brought to school during the day. We appreciate your assistance with this matter.

Please refer to the Student Handbook’s Code of Conduct for more information regarding the Dress Code, which may be found on the BISD web site.
