FINE ARTS

Fine Arts are made up of the following four separate cores: Visual Art, Dance, Music and Theatre. Fine Arts credit may be earned from the State Core Classes. All other classes that are offered by the four Fine Arts departments and may be taken for elective credit or other credit as stipulated.

VISUAL ART

The following fulfills Fine Art graduation requirements:

3D Design 150550110, 11, 12Semester

Students will explore the Elements of Art (line, shape, form, texture, space, value, color) and Principles of Design (balance, rhythm, emphasis, unity, variety, repetition, proportion) through various three dimensional art forms. Students will learn a variety of techniques for constructing three dimensional artwork using a different medium for each project. Fee: $40.00

Drawing 150200110, 11, 12Semester

You can learn to draw! No drawing background necessary. This class involves: realistic drawing; using a variety of drawing mediums and techniques. Emphasis will be on learning to draw accurately from observation. Course will include some research, writing, and art history. This class is a prerequisite for Drawing 2. Fee: $20.00

Drawing 250210110, 11, 12Semester

You can improve your drawing skills and be creative! This course focuses on being an innovator through design tasks and fine art tasks. Students will have opportunities to continue improvement of drawing from observation skill. Additional emphasis will be placed on finished art work. A variety of drawing mediums and some reading, writing and discussion will be required. Prerequisite: Transcript or report card showing completion of Drawing 2 with a passing grade. Teacher Signature required.

Fee: $20.00.

Studio Drawing/Drawing 3-450230011, 12Year

This class will explore dry and wet drawing media and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on composition and expression. Students will be expected to develop and demonstrate artistic interpretation abilities and design their own projects. Students will have the chance to draw from still life, models, and on location. Prerequisite: Transcript or report card showing completion of Drawing 2 with a passing grade. Teacher Signature required. Fee: $20.00 Per Semester.

Painting 1-2 (Watercolor)50300010, 11, 12Year

This class will introduce painting through a variety of watercolor techniques. Brushes can be rented for $5 per semester, or students may supply their own. Basic paints will be provided. Prerequisite: DRAWING 1-2 OR ADVANCED ART IN 9TH GRADE. TEACHER SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED. Fee: $25.00

Advanced Painting 3-450310010, 11, 12Year

This class offers an open studio approach to painting. Students supply their own painting materials. They may choose to work in acrylic, alkyd, watercolor, gouache, oil, or any other painting media. Drawing on location is part of the painting experience. Prerequisite: DRAWING 1-2 OR ADV. ART IN 9TH GRADE. Fee: $20.00 plus purchase of paints.

Digital Photography 15050019, 10, 11, 12Semester

This course will cover the basic use of a digital camera, computer processing, and printing. Emphasis will be placed on creative expression and composition with a camera, as well as, basic introduction to Photoshop. Basic elements and principles of design will be explored. A DIGITAL CAMERA IS REQUIRED! Students must also provide a digital card reader and a flash drive memory device. Fee: $25.00

Digital Photography 250505111, 12Year

The principles of basic photography are expanded to include color composition, procedures for displaying work, and guidelines for evaluation and critiquing photographs. Work will be largely independent and outside shooting on location will be a must. Prerequisites: Digital Photography 1. Fee: $25.00

This class focuses on basic lettering styles, composition and layout, using different art materials. Students help school communication in the form of announcements, flyers, and posters for a variety of events and activities. Prerequisites: Drawing 1or teacher signature. Fee: $20.00

Ceramics 15060019, 10, 11, 12Semester

This is an entry level course in ceramics and pottery making. A new hand building method is introduced for each project. Students learn to form, decorate, glaze, and fire ceramic clay. Students will also learn about pottery and ceramic forms from a variety of cultural and historical periods. Fee: Clay $40.00

Ceramics 2 506051 9, 10, 11, 12 Semester This is an intermediate pottery class with an emphasis on wheel throwing, creative hand building and ceramic sculpture. Students will expand on the skills learned in Ceramics 1 and incorporate new techniques in construction, decoration, glazing, and firing to create more advanced work. Prerequisite: Ceramics 1. Fee: $40.00

Ceramics 3506101 10, 11, 12Semester

This is an advanced pottery and sculpture class which provides freedom for experimentation with techniques and artistic concept. Students will compile a portfolio of work to show competency in the medium in preparation for AP 3D Design or college or career readiness. Prerequisite: Ceramics 2. Fee: $40.00

Sculpture50640110, 11, 12Semester

This class introduces modeling realistic forms in clay. Students learn the basics of sculpture and casting techniques and will have opportunities to produce realistic and abstract forms in such materials as stone, plaster, clay, cast paper, and found objects. Fee: $30.00.

Photography 3-450510010, 11 12Year

Photography 3-4 is a portfolio class. Students will continue to develop their Photoshop skills and understanding of effective composition. Students will use research of historically significant, as well as, contemporary photographers to guide their individual direction and specialization for their portfolio. Each student will produce a portfolio that is broad and well-rounded with different genres of photography. They will also choose an emphasis area to focus on more intently and produce an in depth portfolio in that area. Students will need their own camera and digital storage media. Fee: $30.00. Prerequisite: Digital Photography 1 & 2.

Art Foundations5012019Semester

Instruction expands the concepts taught in Foundations 1 with emphasis on representative and interpretive drawing with further emphasis on color and design concepts, proportion, value, depth, and the use of creative expression as they apply to drawing landscapes, portraits, animals, cartoons and manmade devices. Aesthetics, higher level thinking skills, divergent production, and art criticism are addressed as well. Fee: $20.00.

Exploratory Art CE53000110, 11, 12Semester

This class introduces visual art to the non-major. It provides historical perspective of visual art development. Students will study of major principles, elements, media, and techniques. Nonjudgmental art project, reading, writing, required. Fee: $20.00

AP 3D Design50254011, 12Year

This is a college level art course where students will take their best artwork previously created in Ceramics, Sculpture, or 3D Design and continue to make quality work to create a portfolio of sixteen to twenty-four artworks. Students have more personal freedom to explore artistic ideas through their choice of media. Portfolios are judged for college credit for competency in three areas: Quality, Breadth (variety), and Concentration (an extended investigation of a specific artistic idea). The AP portfolio also includes a written portion where students explain their concentration as well as their growth and development represented in each artwork. Prerequisites: At least two 3D Art Courses including Ceramics 1, 2, or 3, 3D Design 1, or Sculpture 1 with a teacher recommendation. Fee: $40.00 (AP Portfolio Submission Fee $93.00)

Students will gain dance knowledge and skill in technique, elements of dance (space, time, and energy), creative/choreographic processes, as well as gain a thorough understanding of artistic expression, performance, dance history, culture, life skills, and connections to other curricular areas. Styles of emphasis include ballet, jazz, hip hop and modern dance. Students will participate in two performances during the year, and will be required attend afterschool rehearsals. Fees: $10.00 per semester. (Additional performance fees.)

Styles of emphasis include ballet, jazz, hip hop and modern dance. Prerequisite: Dance 2 in the high school or formal dance training. Students will participate in two performances during the year, and will be required attend afterschool rehearsals. Fees: $10.00 per semester. (Additional performance fees.)

Dance 4 (Jr. Company)5002509, 10, 11, 12Year

This advanced level dance course builds dance knowledge and skills in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression, performance, history, culture, life skills, and connections to other curricular areas. Prerequisite: Audition in May. Teacher signature required. Students will participate in performances throughout the year, after school rehearsals will be required. Fees: $150.00 per year.

Dance Company50045010, 11, 12Year

This company level dance course builds dance knowledge and skills in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression, performance, history, culture, life skills, and connections to other curricular areas. Dance Company provides students with professional performance opportunities preparing them for college and professional dance experiences. Prerequisite: Audition in May. Teacher signature required. Students will need to have taken at least one dance class at the high school level. Students will participate in numerous school and community performances throughout the year including the annual school musical in the fall, after school rehearsals are required. Fees: $150.00+ (Additional performance and camp fees.

Drill Team6075409, 10, 11, 12Year

Drill Team (Chattes) is a competing and a performing team.

Members must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and a CPA of 3.0. Expenses are approximately $450 ($600 max) and are required for each team member. Only females are allowed on the team. Drill team requires discipline, hard work, and dedication. Prerequisite: AUDITION REQUIRED

Beginning Social Dance50030010, 11, 12Year

The focus of this year-long beginning social dance course is to give students experience in basic styles and various steps of ballroom and social dances, while learning proper dance etiquette, social skills, teamwork, dance history and culture. Students will also learn and explore the elements of dance (time, space, and energy) and how each relates to partnering. Styles include, but are not limited to Foxtrot, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, East Coast Swing, Cha-Cha, and Rumba. Prerequisite: Students must sign up with a partner, but also acknowledge that assigned partners will rotate throughout the year. Students will participate in two performance opportunities during the year. Fees: $10.00 per semester

Intermediate/Advanced Social Dance50040011, 12Year

The focus of this year-long intermediate social dance course is to give students experience in basic styles and various steps of ballroom and social dances, while learning proper dance etiquette, social skills, teamwork, dance history and culture. Students will also learn and explore the elements of dance (time, space, and energy) and how each relates to partnering. Styles include, but are not limited to Tango, West Coast Swing, Mambo, Samba, Merengue, and Hustle. Prerequisite: Beginning Social Dance in the high school. Teacher signature required. Students must sign up with a partner, but also acknowledge that assigned partners will rotate throughout the year. Fees: $10.00 per semester

Marching Band5093009, 10, 11, 12Year

All students participating in Flag Corp are required to do marching band in the fall and winter guard during the winter months. The primary goal of this group is to provide young people with an experience in music that is both enjoyable and educational, and serves as a source of school spirit and pride. The elements of music are taught through this exiting medium of performance on the football field and on the basketball court. Students will learn and demonstrate marching and accessory fundamentals as demanded by the show and music, and perform at various competitions and athletic or community events. This is a performing ensemble and all members will be expected to participate in all rehearsals and performances Materials Fee: $30.00/year plus uniform, $60.00 Equipment Rental (If applicable) Prerequisite: Audition and instructor signature.

Guitar I (Beginning Guitar)5085119, 10, 11, 12Semester

Students will learn basic guitar fundamentals such as music notation, scales, chord symbols, tablature, and various technical guitar skills. These skills will be taught through the playing of folk, contemporary, and popular music. This course is taught using acoustic guitar techniques and requires the use of the student’s own acoustic guitar. The course is designed to follow different levels of basic performing skills. Each skill level must be completed before moving to the next. Approximately one week will be spent on each skill level; however, students may pace themselves just as long as each level is completed by the end of the semester. Fee: $15.00/Semester.

Guitar II (Intermediate Guitar)5085519, 10, 11, 12Semester

Students will learn higher level guitar fundamentals such as scales, chord symbols, tablature, improvisation, arranging/composing music, and various technical guitar skills. These skills will be taught through the playing of folk, contemporary, and popular music. This course is taught using acoustic guitar techniques and requires the use of the student’s own acoustic guitar. The course is designed to follow different levels of advance performing skills. Each skill level must be completed before moving to the next. Students will also be required to perform in class recitals, as well as other performances as part of their grade. Fee: $15.00/Semester. Prerequisite: Beginning Guitar must have been completed.

This is a year-long course designed for transitioning tenor and bass voices. Emphasis is placed on learning healthy vocal technique, basic music theory, sight reading, and music history. Music will be selected from classical and contemporary genres. Students are expected to participate in at least one evening concert per quarter as a major part of their grade. Fee: $30.00/year, plus uniform (approximately $15-20 additional). No prerequisite.

This is a year-long course designed for the developing woman’s voice. Emphasis is placed on learning healthy vocal technique, basic music theory, sight reading, and music history. Music will be selected from classical and contemporary genres. Students are expected to participate in at least one evening concert per quarter as a major part of their grade. Fee: $30.00/year, plus uniform (approximately $60-80 additional) No prerequisite.

This is a year-long course designed for more advanced female voices. Audition is required for entrance. Emphasis is placed on a deeper exploration of vocal technique (specifically in more contemporary styles), performance techniques, and theory. Students enrolled must commit to focus, precision, and unity. Students are expected to participate in at least one evening concert per quarter as a major part of their grade. Possible opportunity to go on choir tour. Fee: $30.00/year, plus uniform (approximately $60-80 additional) and optional choir tour ($200-600). Fundraising opportunities provided. Prerequisite: MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE TERM IN ANY CHOIR CLASS, SUCCESSFUL AUDITION, AND CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR.

This is a year-long course for advanced female and male voices. Preliminary audition required for entrance. Members are required to meet higher vocal, musical, and rehearsal standards than those of other groups and must be aware of the commitment to attend all rehearsals and programs scheduled for the group. This performing group is open to seniors, juniors, and selected sophomores. Students are expected to participate in at least two evening concerts per quarter as a major part of their grade. Possible opportunity to go on choir tour. Fee: $30.00/year, plus uniform (approximately $80 for women, $110 for men) and optional choir tour ($200-600). Fundraising opportunities provided. Prerequisite: MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE TERM IN ANY CHOIR CLASS, SUCCESSFUL AUDITION, AND CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR.

This is the primary performing group at the high school and has limited registration for advanced vocal students. Audition required for entrance (March). This is a small group of selected students who are anxious to learn both classical and contemporary music, the performance of which involves precision, practice outside of class time, alertness, and commitment. Students are expected to participate in at least two evening concerts per quarter as a major part of their grade, with 20-30 performances in December. Possible opportunity to go on choir tour. Fee: $30.00/year, plus uniform (approximately $80 for women, $125 for men) and optional choir tour ($200-600). Fundraising opportunities provided. Prerequisite: MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE TERM IN ANY CHOIR CLASS, SUCCESSFUL AUDITION, AND CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR. Requisite: Student must enroll in another choir class.
