Staff Dress Code

General Guidelines

The following dress code standards shall apply to all staff.

Items that are not acceptable in the workplace or at work-related activities include the following:

  • Attire that is prohibited in the student dress code.
  • Jogging shorts, running shorts, cut-off shorts (or any other shorts or similar article of clothing shorter than mid-thigh).
  • Athletic wear, such as jogging suits and/or sweat shirts/pants (unless approved for assigned responsibilities by supervisor).
  • Blue jeans that are dirty, worn, too tight, or torn; i.e., in general, not neat-looking in appearance (unless blue jeans are administratively approved for specific circumstances as referenced below).
  • Skirts and dresses shorter than mid-thigh or that are unsuitably short for working with or around students.
  • Underwear as outerwear.
  • Sheer, tight, or short clothing.
  • Garments (e.g., “midriffs”, halter tops, backless clothing, “tube” tops, garments made of fishnet/mesh/similar material, tank tops, “muscle” tops, etc.) that bare or expose traditionally private parts of the body including, but not limited to, the stomach, buttocks, back, and breasts.
  • Sunglasses and/or hats inside the building; please note that some exceptions may be warranted for specific physical conditions.
  • Any clothing, paraphernalia, grooming, jewelry, accessories, or body adornments that contain advertisement, symbols, words, slogans, patches, or pictures that are sexually suggestive; that are drug-, tobacco-, or alcohol-related; that are gang-related; or that are obscene, profane, vulgar, lewd, indecent, or plainly offensive as determined by the supervisor.
  • Any clothing/footwear, paraphernalia, grooming, jewelry, accessories, or body adornments that are in any way disruptive or potentially disruptive to the learning environment or that pose a threat or potential threat to the safety of welfare of the employee or any other person, as determined by the supervisor.

Specific Guidelines

Professional educational staff (teachers, special services providers, para-educators) are expected to maintain a high standard of dress in order to appear in a professionally appropriate manner and provide, direct, positive role modeling for students. Examples of professionally appropriate attire include, but are not limited to, collared shirts, sweaters, dress/casual coordinates, dress slacks, suits, dresses, ties, and sports coats. Blue jeans are discouraged unless designated administratively for specific circumstances. Any request to deviate from these standards shall be specifically addressed to the appropriate supervisor.

For staff working in warm weather, shorts and other warm weather attire must be professional in appearance and of an appropriate length, in accordance with the General Guidelines above.

Student Life staff are permitted to wear clothing appropriate to planned activities. Examples of appropriate attire (not specifically mentioned otherwise) in the residential setting include jeans (in accordance with the General Guidelines above), jogging suits, tee shirts, and dress shorts.

Administrative/Support staff (including facilities, dining services, etc.) are expected to appear in a professionally appropriate manner in accordance with the General Guidelines above.

Facilities staff, due to the nature of their responsibilities, may wear casual, work-appropriate clothing throughout the year in accordance with the General Guidelines above. Hats may be worn by facilities staff when working outdoors.
