33rd Annual Dairy Goat Conference

SPEAKER’S BIOS

Dr. Lee Ann Fosdick

Dr. Lee AnnBerglund-Fosdick will be the featured speaker at the 33rd Annual Florida Dairy Goat Association Conference. Dr.Fosdick of Fowlerville, Michigan is a former Florida resident who is well known by those who have been raising dairy goats for a while. She showed lovely Alpines for many years here in Florida. In Michigan Dr. Lee Ann owns and operates Lee Ann's Mobile Vet Service. She specializes in ruminants, camelids, llamas, alpacas, goats, and sheep. Not only does Dr. Fosdick have her own veterinary practice, but she also participates in low cost animal clinics throughout Michigan. She has made ten trips to Haiti giving humanitarian aid to the people and animals of the earthquake devastated country. Dr. Fosdickis also very active in ADGA. She is on the planning committee for the 2011 convention which will be hosted by the Michigan Dairy Goat Association, her own state's dairy goat association.
In 1996 Lee Ann and Christina Cassidy published a most delightful children's book, Julia Ann. Julia Ann describes the antics of an Alpine kid looking for food and then discovering that mother's milk is the best.
We are delighted that Dr. Berglund-Fosdick will be part of the annual conference.

Jack Gaskin, DVM, PhD.

Jack M. Gaskin, DVM, PhD, is a long time supporter of the Florida Dairy Goat Association. Prior to “retirement” Dr. Jack was affiliated with the College of Veterinary Medicine as a teacher/researcher for 35 years. During that interval he served as liaison to the Florida Dairy Goat Association, the Florida Meat Goat Association, and the Meat Sheep Alliance, helping to coordinate many continuing education events. Now retired, he continues to be a licensed Florida veterinarian who provides FAMACHA training and dabbles as a part-time practitioner/consultant.

Mr. Sean Dioca – Certified Veterinary Technician

Sean hails from Massapequa, Long Island and moved to Florida about 25 years ago and considers it his home. He is a certified veterinary technician working mostly in emergency at Animal Emergency St Petersburg, Emergency Care Center Largo, Animal Emergency of Hernando, and Veterinary Surgical Services as post op ICU Tech. He also does Biomedical Photography. Sean attended St PetersburgCollege for the Veterinary technical training and also has degrees in Biology and photography.

He owns a 7.5 acre farm in Masaryktown Florida. He moved there after a noisy ND doeling living in his house caused his neighbors to call codes enforcement on him. But Sean would NEVER get rid of his goats so he moved to a farm zoned for agriculture in order to keep them. His goat herd currently numbers 42 goats and counting. He has Nigerians, Pygmys, Fainters, Spanish Meat Goats, Pygoras, Nigoras, Nubian and Angoras. Sean purchased about half of them and the other half were given to him by people that could not care for them any longer. His farm is like a goat sanctuary and he spends all his free time taking care of the animals, making goat houses, play sets, ramps, and jungle gyms in addition to repairing fence every day. He also has a llama, 3 donkeys, 2 ponies, 2 guardian dogs including an Akbash and a Maremma Puppy in training. A Samoyed and a Siberian Husky both of which were raised with the goats and think they are goats and about 15 barn cats complete the rest of the family.

Joanne Jackson & Vicky Chisolm

Vicky Chisolm has been raising Dairy Goats for nine years, and like many of us it all started with a 4H project with her grandchildren. It all went crazy from there and that is when L & J Farm was started. Vicky now has Saanens, Toggenburgs, Lamanchas, Nubians, Recorded Grades and an Alpine.

Joanne Jackson raised Lamanchas for thirty years and just recently retired from the milk stand. She used to travel from her home in Tallahassee each summer to teach the newbies how to make goat milk soap.

One year, Vicky Chisholm was the only one who could work the soap making class into her schedule so she taught it instead. Joanne always made the fancy soap called “Jacksons Fancy” and Vicky always made plain soap, so they decided to put two good things together and named it Jolee Soap Company. Together, they make handmade goat milk soap and all natural bath products, bath salts, body scrub, and foot scrub. All products are sold separate or in different sized baskets created for all occasions. Several times a year, Joanne makes the trip from Tallahassee to St. Cloud to make the soap in Vicky’s workshop at L & J Farm. Joanne sells in Tallahassee and Vicky in St. Cloud together they cover other areas.
