Order of Service for 13 December 2015, Advent 3

We warmly welcome you to Holy Innocents. In this order of service we say or sing together the words printed in bold. We begin by standing to sing a hymn.

Processional Hymn

On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry
announces that the Lord is nigh;
awake and hearken, for he brings
glad tidings of the King of kings.
/ 2. Then cleansed be every breast from sin;
make straight the way for God within,
prepare we in our hearts a home
where such a mighty Guest may come.
3. For thou art our salvation, Lord,
our refuge and our great reward;
without thy grace we waste away
like flowers that wither and decay. / 4. To heal the sick stretch out thine hand,
and bid the fallen sinner stand;
shine forth and let thy light restore
earth's own true loveliness once more.

5. All praise, eternal Son, to thee,

whose advent doth thy people free;

whom with the Father we adore

and Holy Ghost for evermore.

Charles Coffin, 1736; trans. John Chandler, 1837

Greeting

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.Amen.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lighting the Advent Candle

Lord Jesus, light of the world,

John told the people to prepare,

for you were very near.

As Christmas grows closer day by day,

help us to be ready to welcome you now.

Amen.

Confession

Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy

The priest declares God’s forgiveness, and all respondAmen.

Collect

The priest invites everyone to pray.

God for whom we watch and wait, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way of your Son: give us courage to speak the truth, to hunger for justice, and to suffer for the cause of right, with Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Reading (sit)

Philippians 4.4-7

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Philippians.

Rejoice in the Lord always;again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgivinglet your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God,which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading (stand)

We turn to face the gospel book as it is taken to the middle of the people.

All sing:

  1. Word of justice, Alleluia,
Come to dwell here.
Maranatha!
/
  1. Word of mercy, Alleluia,
Live among us.
Maranatha!
  1. Word of power, Alleluia,
Live within us.
Maranatha!
5. Word of healing, Alleluia,
Heal our sorrow.
Maranatha! /
  1. Word of freedom, Alleluia,
Save your people.
Maranatha!
6. Word of comfort, Alleluia,
Bring us hope now.
Maranatha!

by Bernadette Farrell (b. 1957)

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 3.10-16

And the crowds asked him,‘What then should we do?’ In reply he said to them,

‘Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.’ Even tax-collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, ‘Teacher, what should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.’ Soldiers also asked him,‘And we, what should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.’ As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Talk

Affirmation of faith (stand)

Do you believe and trust in God the Father

source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist?

We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,

who took our human nature, died for us and rose again?

We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,

who gives life to the people of God

and makes Christ known in the world?

We believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.

This is our faith.

We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession (sit or kneel)

The following is sung during the time of prayer.

Waitfor theLord, whose day is near.

Waitfor theLord, keep watch, take heart.

The Peace (stand)

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

and also with you.

We share a sign of peace with the people near us.

Offertory Hymn

During this hymn there will be a collection for the work of the church.

1. Like a mighty river flowing,
like a flower in beauty growing,
far beyond all human knowing
is the perfect peace of God. / 2. Like the hills serene and even,
like the coursing clouds of heaven,
like the heart that's been forgiven
is the perfect peace of God.
3. Like the summer breezes playing,
like the tall trees softly swaying,
like the lips of silent praying
is the perfect peace of God. / 4. Like the morning sun ascended,
like the scents of evening blended,
like a friendship never ended
is the perfect peace of God.

5. Like the azure ocean swelling,

like the jewel all-excelling,

far beyond our human telling

is the perfect peace of God.

After the hymn a prayer may be said to which all respond Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer (remain standing)

The Lord be with you

and also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

The priest praises God for his mighty acts and all respond

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

The priest recalls the Last Supper, ending with:

And now with all your saints we give you glory, through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit, today and for ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us.

Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace.

Hymn

1.Make way, make way, For Christ
the King
In splendour arrives
Fling wide the gates and welcome
Him
Into your lives / 2. He comes the broken hearts to heal
The prisoners to free
The deaf shall hear, the lame shall dance
The blind shall see
3. And those who mourn with heavy hearts
Who weep and sigh
With laughter, joy and royal crown
He'll beautify / 4. We call you now to worship Him
As Lord of all
To have no gods before Him
Their thrones must fall!

Make way! Make way! For the King of kings

Make way! Make way! And let His kingdom in
