$1,000 Scholarship will be awarded for:

* Harrisburg High School Graduating Senior

* Attending a two or four year accredited Pennsylvania college/university

* With a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average at time of application

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is an award dedicated to the memory of Galvin H. Brown, Sr. He was an active teacher and counselor in the Ethnic Minority Committee until 1984.

Galvin H. Brown, Sr., served as a Building Representative for the Harrisburg Education Association; in addition, he served as a Board Member for the Ethnic Minority Committee.

He was a strong advocate for Education who believed in quality and equality in education for all. He always encouraged others to Strive for Excellence.

Each year one scholarship is awarded to a Harrisburg High School graduating seniorwho plans on matriculating at a Pennsylvania college/university. This Scholarship provides encouragement, support and financial assistance to graduating seniors who wish to pursue higher education as a means of self-development. Each recipient must express a strong desire to pursue higher education, attain academic excellence and to perform community service. In doing so, each scholarship recipient mirrors Galvin H. Brown Sr., belief for

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Students interested in applying for the scholarship must provide the following information to the scholarship committee by April 6, 2018.

  1. Completed scholarship application and checklist (attached).
  2. Three letters of recommendation from: a teacher, counselor, school administrator, employer, minister, or community leader.

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATIONS FROM FAMILY MEMBERS AND/OR FRIENDS.

  1. Official copy of the applicant’s high school transcript with official school seal

in a sealed envelope.(9th-12th Grade)

  1. 500–700 word typewritten essay.
  2. Provide a copy of your college acceptance letter.

CONDITIONS

  1. All applicants must be a graduating senior from a Harrisburg High School campus with a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average.
  2. Applications must be received on or before April 6, 2018.
  3. All official transcripts must provide the school seal and must be in a sealed envelope.
  4. An original typed essay must accompany this application.
  5. No relative of the Ethnic Minority Executive Committee members may apply.

ACCEPTANCE PROCESS

  1. Award recipients are selected by the EMC Scholarship Committee and announced at the Senior Class Awards Ceremony held in May of each year.
  2. One scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1,000.
  3. The recipient will receive a reply regarding the award.
  4. Scholarship recipient(s) must accept scholarship award in person or by designated proxy.
  5. In order to qualify for this scholarship, an applicant must be enrolled as a full time student after completion of their first semester in college.
  6. Award monies are remitted directly to the college after the first semester official transcript is submitted. The student must have obtained a minimum 2.0 grade point average for the first college semester. The official college transcript must be mailed to:
