On behalf of Dr. Trevor Silver, FRCGP, Chairman of our Board of Trustees, information regarding the Awards of £3,000 each to be made in Spring 2011 is now sent to you electronically. I enclose an advertisement and Further Particulars about these Awards with an Application Form, all of which is self-explanatory. Also enclosed for your interest is a list of all previous Awards since the inception of the Fund in 1998, following the death of Dr. Eric Gambrill in 1997. Please note our website address as above. A Freephone number for applicants will be available soon, please see website for further information.

Dr. Silver would be most grateful if you would arrange to pass this on electronically to your GP membership so that information on the availability of these Awards is as widely disseminated to GPs in the UK as possible. Advertisements about the Award are being placed via RCGP channels and information has been sent to all Deans and Directors of Postgraduate GP Education in the UK.

Award Winners’ names are placed on the Eric Gambrill Awards’ Honours Board at the RCGP and bound copies of the Reports of their Award-winning projects are held at the RCGP.

ERIC GAMBRILL MEMORIAL FUND

Applications are invited for TWO Eric Gambrill Travelling Fellowships, to be awarded in Spring 2011. The value of each Award is £3,000.

Those eligible for the Awards will be fully trained and practising UK general medical practitioners.

In recognition of Dr. Eric Gambrill’s interest in general practice, education and travel, the successful applicants will be expected to undertake a study or project as part of his/her professional career development.

THE ERIC GAMBRILL MEMORIAL FUND

This fund was established in 1998 in memory of Dr Eric Gambrill who practised as a general practitioner in Crawley, West Sussex and was Associate Postgraduate Adviser in General Practice and Deputy GP Dean, South West Thames Region and Civilian Adviser in General Practice to the Army.

Dr Gambrill’s many interests included GP education, assessment and travel and he contributed widely to the medical literature.

The Memorial Fund is the subject of a Charitable Trust dated 1 April 1998 whose purpose is the further education of general medical practitioners. The Trustees will award grants once a year which may be used for the purpose of approved study and travel.

Application forms obtainable from the Secretary of the Fund must be returned by the closing date each year and awards will be made in spring each year.

Those eligible for award will be active, practising, fully trained general medical practitioners. An up-to-date CV must be included with the completed application form.

Any publication ensuing from such a project must include acknowledgement of the Eric Gambrill Memorial Fund.

Bound copies of Award Winners’ Reports are held at The Royal College of General Practitioners, and Award Winners’ names are placed on the Eric Gambrill Memorial Fund Honours’ Board at the RCGP.

EDUCATION AWARDS

AND

TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS IN GENERAL PRACTICE

The conditions upon which grants will be made by the Trustees are set out below:

1.  An applicant for assistance from the Fund shall make a full statement in writing to the Trustees of the object or objects for which such assistance is required and shall furnish to the Trustees such further particulars and explanation as they may from time to time require.

  1. Every grant by the Trustees shall be for such period as the Trustees in their absolute discretion shall from time to time decide and although they may express to an applicant an intention of continuing such a grant for a stated or indefinite period they shall not be bound thereby but shall be at liberty to refuse to continue the same without assigning a reason.
  2. Every person to whom a grant is made shall undertake with the Trustees in writing:

(a) to work in such places or by such methods as shall be stated in his/her application;

(b) to pursue to the best of his/her endeavours the object or objects for which it is made;

(c)  in particular to devote to such object or objects such part of this time as shall be stated in his/her application;

(d) to expend the grant solely and exclusively on the object or objects for which it is made;

(e) to report in writing promptly, fully and accurately to the Trustees when required regarding the work carried out and the progress thereof and the work remaining to be done;

(f)  to render to the Trustees if so requested full and accurate accounts in writing of the expenditure of the grant;

(g)  to refund to the Trustees without delay any balance of the grant remaining unexpended on the completion of the object or objects for which it was made on the expiration of the period for which it was made, or otherwise, if required by the Trustees so to do;

(h) if the results of the project are published, to give the Fund appropriate acknowledgement and

proper recognition of the support received from the Fund; to inform the Trustees of the publication in which the report is to appear, and to provide the Board of Trustees with a copy of the journal which includes such publication as a result of the Award project;

(i)  on completion of the study/project, Award Winners will be expected to provide the Board of Trustees with a full Report of the study undertaken, which will be held on behalf of the Eric Gambrill Memorial Fund at the RCGP.

(j)  The Board of Trustees of the Eric Gambrill Memorial Fund would appreciate, where possible, regular updates of the progress of prize winning projects, both during and ongoing after completion.

  1. The Trustees may forthwith determine a grant at any time without assigning a reason if in their opinion there shall have been any impropriety or misconduct on the part of the person to whom it has been made and shall not be required to disclose any facts, information or beliefs upon which such opinion may have been founded.
  1. The Trustees shall have power at any time, in their absolute discretion, to waive in writing any provision of these rules in any particular case or cases.
