JOB DESCRIPTION
THE EMPLOYER: Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS)
LOCATION: Eden Rural Foyer, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 8ET
REPORTS TO: Charity Manager
HOURS: 22.5 hrs
SALARY RANGE: £23,000 to £26,000, pro rata
DURATION: Fixed term contract to end July 2018 (with potential to extend subject to additional funding)
CAfS ROLE AND PURPOSE
CAfS is the leading organisation in Cumbria showcasing low carbon living, energy efficiency improvements, renewable technology and reduced use of fossil fuels, both on a domestic scale and in the community. The charity is driving the shift towards a zero carbon Cumbria and provides information, advice and motivation through events, site visits and practical projects. With over 16 years of experience, CAfS is the first point of reference in the county for information on sustainability and energy.
CAfS have recently attracted funding for several exciting projects and the charity is embarking on new areas of activity. This role will give the right candidate the opportunity to create their own approach to marketing to ensure that the impact of our work is maximised.
MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE:
To develop and implement a marketing strategy for CAfS which ensures our ‘Zero Carbon Cumbria’ messages and opportunities are clearly communicated to the maximum numbers of appropriate people. You will be deepening the relationships with our existing stakeholders, attracting new audiences, using your creativity and dynamism to deliver greater impact and traction. You will be the member of our team shaping our identity and communicating our ambition; you will be taking ownership of the CAfS style. You willprovide practical marketing support to the team. You will be at the helm of all external communications.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Developing and delivering a communications plan and scheduling marketing activity
- Developing, deliveringand maintaining an attractive, user friendly, well-used, easily navigable web site and overseeing and managing the content of the website and other online communications.
- Developing and delivering an active social media following and ensuring strong communication with CAfS supporters.
- Developing and co-ordinating the production of all marketing material including events and course material.
- Working closely with local and regional media to ensure maximum coverage of activities and events.
- Producing pro-forma documents to assist project managers to produce press releases, design briefs and various other standard marketing requirements
MAIN TASKS:
1.To create, develop and manage a communications plan, ensuring it meets the organisation’s overall objectives.
2.To work closely with Project Managers and lead the co-ordination of dynamic, user-focused, timely, and accessible content for the website ensuring quality control and accuracy.
3.To set the tone for, write copy for and ensure distributed of the CAfS newsletter to supporters.
4.To manage the content strategy across all online channels, including reviewing and generating content for the website and expanding the use of social mediato keep communities and individuals aware of all relevant developments.
5.To source content for, copywrite, proof read and disseminate articles for press releases and publications, working closely with other staff.
6.To plan and produce the Annual Report, working closely with the Manager to agree a production schedule, style and key messages.
7.To develop, update and promote leaflets and other literature as necessary.
8.To manage and develop CAfS image library to ensure we have powerful images for all marketing materials
9.To assist in the development of information materials including case studies, short films and presentations.
10.Maintain and develop CAfS database of and relationships with local and (where appropriate) regional and national media contacts.
11.To manage relationships with design agencies, website contractors and other suppliers to commission web developments and other work as required.
12.To develop a calendar of external events including community conferences and county shows where CAfS can be represented, and attending said events or ensuring there is a member of staff present at each event) with a quality and engaging information stand and relevant literature.
13.To ensure that all publications, including presentations, leaflets and website adhere to both the charity’s and external funders’ guidance on corporate branding.
14.To be responsible for monitoring and reporting on the impact of our marketing to ensure we continually improve our external communication. To routinely collect feedback and statistics through the use of surveys, feedback forms, Google Analytics etc. Produce reports for staff and trustees as required.
15.To manage and build CAfS contact database to ensure targeted communications.
16. To keep up-to-date with new digital technology and online marketing trends.
17.To recruit and line manage any additional marketing and communications staff, contractors and volunteers as and when required.
18. To carry out any other task or project required from time to time, as directed by the Manager or Trustees.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential skills and attributes:
- An understanding of and interest in the objectives that CAfS seeks to deliver.
- Ability to present CAfS as a professional, driven organisation with climate change being central to everything we do.
- Strong communication skills and an ability to communicate with people at all levels and from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Experience of writing in various print formats and for different audiences.
- Ability to market projects and activities in an engaging manner to a target audience
- Working knowledge of website design, development and HTML and experience of using content management systems
- Ability to create and manage communications plans
- Proven social media skills
- An understanding of local media outlets.
- Show experience of briefing, liaising with and procuring from external agencies e.g. designers, web designers, printers.
- Ability to work flexibly, juggling multiple priorities;
- Creative, inspired approach to work;
- Ability to own the role, work on own initiative, with autonomy, without day to day supervision;
- An eye for detail and accuracy;
- Ability to work in a small team
The following are desirable but not essential:
- Experience of working in the environmental sector
- Experience in a similar role
- An existing network of contacts across Cumbria.
- Experience of managing various different projects with different branding and information needs.
- Understanding of the role of the voluntary sector
- Knowledge and understanding of Data Protection and Copyright issues
- Knowledge of web accessibility issues
- Experience of planning, organising and scheduling projects
