The Elizabeth “Clay” Smith Humanitarian Award is one that’s especially meaningful to our group. It was created to honor one of our most selfless members that lost her battle to breast cancer in 2014. This award is given to honor a HR Professional who promotes well being, respect and dignity within their community, while driving to make a lasting difference and to encourage others to do the same. In doing so this person exemplifies compassion, courage and professionalism in the practice of human resources as well as in their personal lives.

I for one know Clay would have loved this year’s recipient.

She has been involved with her local SHRM Chapter, Alamance County HR, for over 10 years and served numerous positions on the NC SHRM State Council she has also volunteered her time to the:

Relay For Life where she’s served as a committee member, Luminary Chair and Survivors Chair

Mebane’s Women’s Club where she is currently the Treasurer

Mebane Business Association

Chair of the Mebane Dogwood Festival

Board Member of the Children’s Museum of Alamance County

Alamance Regional Charitable Foundation Board where she served as Treasurer

She’s even served on the Workforce Development Board.

This individual can always be seen giving, helping and encouraging and she truly is a bright spot to our group. Never wanting or asking for recognition yet giving so selflessly. We can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award in honor of our friend. Congratulations Cheryl Ray.

We could be here all night if I listed all of her contributions to HR, her local chapter and even our State Chapter so I will try to scale it down as best as I can.

She is currently an active member of the TSHRM Chapter. She has held many positions in TSHRM including Secretary, President Elect, President, Immediate Past President and Board Advisor. Additionally she has also served as Secretary and Community Relations Chair on the NC SHRM State Council.

She has a BA in History from AlleghenyCollege and a MBA in Finance from SeattlePacificUniversity. She also holds a certificate from DukeUniversity in Global Human Resources and an industry specific certification of Fell of the Life Management Institute.

She has been an employee benefit specialist for over 30 years working in many capacities in the employee benefit industry. She also volunteers her time at least 10 times a year to speak at local chapters and organizations to help educate the HR community on a wide variety of employee benefit topics.

In 2014 in conjunction with Asila Calhoun this individual initiated the Community Relations Chair role with our NC SHRM State Council. They created and developed our Pinnacle Award winning program FEED NC where all of the chapters across our state collect food and donations for their local food banks. The 1styear saw nearly 50,000 lbs of food donated across the state. The second year an amazing 295,000 lbs of food was collected during the summer months when our local food banks need donations the most.

This individual gives her heart to her family, her friends, her company, the HR Profession and all the organizations she’s a member of. We count ourselves blessed to have her on our team and are pleased to Congratulate Joanne Forbes our 2016 Richard “Dick” Peoples HR Professional of the Year!
