Tattoo Aftercare
Artist: ______
***Always Wash Your Hands Before Caring for Your New Tattoo!!!***
1)Carefully remove plastic wrap after 45 minutes to an hour. It’s normal to see blood and/or clear fluid under the plastic.
2)Wash your tattoo with warm water and unscented antibacterial soap. Only use your hands/fingers to wash it, never a wash cloth or luffa. Do not ever scrub your tattoo. It’s also good to rinse your tattoo with cold water after washing it, to help speed up healing time and make your colors bolder.
3)Apply a thin layer of A&D ointment (similar to the amount used when applying chapstick) to your tattoo at least 3 times a day, for the first 3 days.
4)On day 4, stop using A&D ointment and switch to an unscented lotion. It’s important that the lotion is fragrance-free because anything scented contains alcohol, and that will dry out your tattoo. Any brand of lotion is fine. Some brands that work especially well are Lubriderm, Curel, or Eucerin. Continue to put lotion on your tattoo for 2 full weeks.
5)Moisture and cleanliness are the two most important aspects of tattoo aftercare. It’s essential that you keep your tattoo clean and moisturized the entire time it is healing.
For the following two weeks:
DO NOT allow your tattoo to dry out. Keep it moisturized at all times.
DO NOT soak your tattoo. Do not take a bath, go in a hot tub or pool, or enter any open bodies of water, such as rivers, lakes, oceans, ponds, etc. Showers are fine.
DO NOT scratch or pick at your tattoo. Try to avoid touching it in general.
DO NOT re-wrap your tattoo with plastic, bandages, or anything else for any reason.
DO NOT expose your new tattoo to direct sunlight. After healing is complete, always apply sunscreen to your tattoos when you’re outside to keep them bright and bold.
DO NOT ever touch your tattoo with unclean hands for any reason!
6)Keep your tattoo away from animals and anywhere animals have been, especially animal fur. Animals can carry staph, and exposure to it could lead to a serious infection.
7)Peeling, scabbing, and minor irritation/redness are normal during the healing process.
8)Swelling, severe redness, intense heat/hot feeling or puss leakage are all signs of a serious infection. If you think your tattoo might be infected, or that you might be having an allergic reaction, please call our shop and/or your health care provider immediately.
The rules and regulations governing body art establishments and body artists require that those conditions are reported to the Health Department within 24 hours of the discovery.
Practicing proper Tattoo Aftercare is necessary in order for your tattoo to heal properly. If you follow these instructions and keep your tattoo clean and moisturized, it will heal quickly and look great!
