Lykkeinher blog lingq.com March, comments on Five Fab Ways to Stay Motivated

“Sometimes when you want to learn a language the toughest part is NOT the grammar nor is it the lack of vocabulary, or that you can’t yet understand as much as you want to… it is finding the motivation to keep going.

She suggests “Take away: Do whatever you enjoy, and do it as much as you can; learning a language should never become a chore as that will KILL allmotivation” *1.

In a Study Conducted at South East European University;Merita Ismaili, the researcher commented on using the movie in teaching foreign language .* 2.

“Being exposed to different media and technology resources, from audio to printed material students lacks the motivation for learning in conventional way. Course books and CD‘s offered in classes turn out to be artificial and not very engaging for students. One way of bringing variety into the classroom is the use of movies in teaching. .

This paper analyzes the effects of using movies in the EFL classroom. It reveals its effects on developing students listening and communication skill. The study was conducted

at the South East European University in the academic year 2011/2012 on a sample of two groups: an experimental and a control group taught conventionally .The study concluded that movies attract students’ attention, present language in a more natural way that found in course-books. What is more important movies offer a visual context aids which help students understanding and improve their

learning skills

The study was conducted with the objectives:

•To elaborate and analyze the effectiveness of using movies on development of the students language competence and performance in academic settings.

• To examine if using movies can be engaging and helpful for students get more engaged with the reading activities.

• To examine if watching movies may serve as a bridge between learning skills and language objectives

(output) Based on the findings of the study three pedagogical implications were emphasized.

First, teachers can employ movie-based instruction to improve students’ listening and speaking skills. Second, teachers can increase students’ interests and learning motivation by incorporating movies in the reading activities.

Last but not least, activities derived from the films, such as dictation, group discussion, and oral presentation, can also enhance students’ listening and speaking skills.

And now my experience with using movies and songs

This is kind of a story but interesting

It was a not very good weather day, but it was my first day of a short project with my new student ,a highly positioned mature gentleman .He entered the classroom ,hung his coat ,put his bag down and slipped into the chair without even wishing good afternoon. I wished good luck to me and waited for him to open the conversation waited and waited ,and waited .no good or bad afternoon ,then very softly I asked if he need some water or tea coffee……hunhun no reaction ….it was only me in action ,I waited waited he remained silent …I could not understand what to do ………and suddenly one sentence travelled to my ears…..”I don’t know why I have to learn another language ……..same torture again”……

Oh! So this is the story! I could understand now..

I could understand the challenge .Not a simple nut to crack...So what strategy to adopt was the question and the stories of making of Panchatantra reflected in my mind.

I convinced him that even I was not that much in love with the Books or grammar rules. He started looking relaxed on my confidential secret sharing. I talked about some very interesting YouTubeuploading’s, Bollywooddances, dressesTajmahal,Lalkila and Santa Banta jokes .He looked amazed ,

I SHOWED HIM ONE YOU TUBE UPLOADING OF one cine award program in which Indian famous Actor Priyanka Chporaamidst her dance performance pulls John Travolta from the audience on to the stage and after learning few steps they both danced on stage so perfectly on one Hindi song dil men bajighantiyan……..

By the time this video finished and replayed two times my new Language learning haterstudent was changed in to a curious and motivated learner.

We talked about VEER-Zara,MugleAAZAM,Jodha-aKabar, Devdas and of course slum dog millionaire. We talked about President Obama`s India visit, using some Hindi song lines ,Prime minister Modi`s US visit and this and that.

It was Monday, so I told him let us listen to Monday song and then started the Hindi teaching

The song Somwarko ham mile ………….

By the end of the four hour school day he knew the names of all the seven days, names of the colors the time expressions, and handful of vocabulary while understanding thechanging scenes.

Then I realized why they say

Technology cannot replace a teacher ,but teacher with no knowledge of technology can be replaced .

(My job is saved, thanks to Bollywood.)

Now a small note about the use of song;

1. Playreplay the song.

2. Make note of high frequency words , low frequency words.

3. Make note of gender word……go adding another and another and another

4. Make note of number…………go adding another and another and another

5. Sentence construction by….. Resetting the song line into pros line

6. Vocab……rhyming words. Opposite words. Synonym words similar sounding words

7. Keep on adding as the level improves with oblique etc…..

For example: Somwarko ham mile
