The Eastside Rotary Tradition

February 8, 2012

Around the Tables…Jeffrey Morgan was a visitor from Kearney Rotary Club. Lee Ann Smiley from Sudden-Link was the guest of Susie Campbell. (See Picture) Dean Mausoff, formerly of Downtown Rotary visited to tell of a new health initiative for small business that he is heading. for Veridian Health. We are one of 7 counties nationally in which the program will be offered. The idea is to promote employee wellness and thus make health insurance more affordable. Tammi Sheets received her blue badge. Tracy James, our Ford-femme, was inducted into the club in a nice ceremony presided over by Jeannie Chavez.

Will Woods’ team has been getting all the Spaghetti Dinner attention in past weeks because Shawn has been absent. Now Shawn was out in full force, predicting Team Drew will soon catch up to Team Woods. He reprised the old Aesop fable about the Tortoise and the Hare—concluding with his big punch line: Slow and Steady Sells More Spaghetti!

We had the good luck to be seated by two of our fashion plates, even though no prizes were awarded this week. Sherri Hahn, late wearer of the cranberry red outfit, showed up in a striking violet suit (or maybe it was purple) and Jeannie Chavez was sporty in a fuzzy sweater—maybe angora—that was gray with little rhinestone highlights. Keep it up girls! My aged ticker needs to be revved up to keep me warm when it’s ten degrees outside.

Remember our discussion last week that Kim Langholz had won a prize in the Albrecht Gallery’s membership show---(it was a red ribbon for second place). We took the faithful Nikkon downstairs and got you a pretty good snapshot of her work---a goldfish rendered in watercolor. (See Photo)

Activities on the Eastside Schedule: Saturday, February 25 is the Chili Supper at South Side Rotary; there is always a good Eastside delegation in attendance. They reciprocate by doing spaghetti with us. MARCH 2 IS EASTSIDE’S BIG SPAGHETTI DINNER. Tuesday, March 6 will be our day to serve at the Open Door Food Kitchen (featuring delicious left-overs from the Spaghetti Dinner.) Establishing the Interact Club at St.Joseph Christian School awaits compliance with the regulations of their administration and school board. Pending work session for April will be the installation of playground equipment at Family Alliance, our District Simplified Grant Project. Annual Club Anniversary Dinner April 20 or 27; Amy is shopping for a good spot Various awards will be presented, as usual, and there will be a remembrance of Roger Parson.

By-Laws Notice #2: Kristi Walters’ membership application has been approved by the board.

Yes, California is different: The L.A. area reports a new crime wave—breaking into high school band rooms and stealing the tubas. A popular musical style for Latino combos features the big horn. The hombre who scores a hot tuba can build his own band around it and oom-pah his way to top dollars.

A Vocational Tornado When Shelly Hulet talks vocation, she covers a lot of ground because she’s never confined herself to one activity. As a Kansas County town girl, in Neodasha, Shelly played a lot of tennis and then joined the Army Reserve before heading off to K-State to study hotel and restaurant management. While working for Sodexho Food Service she fed the work staff at Boehringer Ingelheim and also at Snorkel in Elwood. Then she got a real estate license and ran a high school cafeteria before feeling the call to learn taxes and accounting at Mo.West. She’s now at Sumner, Carter et al. as a staff accountant, working with personal taxes, estate taxes and tax law research. She studies a couple hours every day in preparation for the ultimate CPA exam. Her talk demonstrated that she does a mean Power Point and she also confesses to doing Face Book and Twitter. Also in her busy days she finds time for husband Scott and four-year old Ryder (who rang bells for our Salvation Army project at Hy-Vee.)
