A Dream in Black and White:

The Digital Photo Print on Ilford Baryta Paper

Now Available at WhiteWall for the First Time: Digitally-Exposed Baryta Prints

Berlin, Germany — July 1, 2014 — Good news for fans of black-and-white photography: WhiteWall is expanding its product portfolio with photo prints on high-end Ilford Baryta Paper. For the first time, with the help of a unique machine tailored to the specific needs of this premium paper, the professionals’ photo lab has succeeded in bringing precise laser exposure and traditional, photo-chemical black and white development together in an automated process. Thanks to this sophisticated process, prints on baryta are now available, even in large formats that meet customers’ specifications to the inch. On the website WhiteWall.com, it is merely a snap to transform color photos into black and white pictures.

The difference between conventional photo papers and Ilford’s baryta paper is the layer of barium sulfate, also known as baryta. As the most enduring of photo materials, it is usually reserved for especially high-end works due to the sheer amount of manual work it requires. First, using a LightJet laser exposure system, the image is exposed onto the baryta paper. Next comes the silver-halide developing, which is followed by the fixing process. Furthermore, the additional washing and special air-drying are done by hand, requiring an experienced lab technician to manage the process every step of the way.

The paper combines rich white-and-black tones to make contours particularly detailed. Due to its great tonal range, professionals value this high-quality material. Thanks to the natural brilliance of the baryta layer, neither brightening nor lamination is necessary — the slightly textured surface will not lose its luster, even after many years. The 315g/m² paper is available for formats from 3½”x3½” up to 39⅜”x39⅜”.
