Matt Mayo, PhD, Director, Center for Biostatistics and Advanced Informatics, Professor and Chair, Department of Biostatistics

Dr. Mayo has been collaborating in basic, clinical and population-based research for over 12 years. He has aided in the development of over 50 funded grants since arriving at KUMC 9 years ago.

Kelly Daniels, LPN, Interim Division Director, Clinical Research Administration

Kelly Daniels is the Assistant Director of Clinical Research Administration of the Research Institute. Kelly has been involved in clinical research for over 13 years. She has assisted with the growth of Clinical Research Administration division from the management of 75 trials to over 300 in the past 9 years.

Tim Siskey, Financial Systems Analyst, KUMC Research Institute, Inc

Steven Geiger, CPA, MBA is the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of the KUMC Research Institute. Working closely with him is Tim Siskey who is their Financial Systems Analyst. Together they are responsible for improving financial reporting to the Research Institute board, establishing systems to administer a variety of unique and complex grants and programs, and for creating cash management approach to maximize investment return with a minimum of risk on funds held for researchers.

OBJECTIVES

$Understand the need for biostatistics in experimental design, sample size calculation and how these issues reelate to determining the study budget.

$Medical research that involves the use of human and animals has a cost. There are many issues that go into determining a study budget. Some of these issues will be discussed for both types of research. Examples of industry and federal budgets will be presented along with factors that must go into there development.

$Expose participants to the role of Sponsored Programs Administration in assisting faculty and staff in acquiring knowledge of extramural support for research, education and service projects.

$Provide information and resources to faculty and staff to ensure that these projects are conducted in compliance with federal and state regulations, university policies, and commitments specified in grants, contraacts and agreements with external sponsors.

$Explain the importance of protocol review prior to accepting a budget.
