APPLYING FOR A JOB

SOME ADVICE ON COMPLETING THE FORM

Because Depaul International strives to be an equal opportunities employer, the application form plays an important part in the selection process: both in deciding whether or not you will be short listed for an interview and as a basis for the interview itself. The following advice is designed to help you to complete the application form as effectively as possible.

Read the Job Description and Person Specification carefully.______

·  Every post advertised has a full job description and person specification that will be used to decide which people are interviewed and appointed.

Analyse the job description and person specification______

·  Ask yourself why you are interested in the job. Would it be a good career move: sideways to broaden your experience or promotion if you are ready for more responsibility? (Can you support this?)

·  The person specification will list the competencies, knowledge, qualification and experience required. Show how you meet each requirement.

Look at your experience______

·  What evidence have you got that illustrates you have the necessary skills, knowledge and experience? Try to clearly provide information that demonstrates your capabilities against each of the criteria listed in the person specification, taking into account the job you are applying for. For example it is easy to say you have had to liaise with clients to identify and respond to their needs but it is more effective to give examples of how you have used these skills and what you have achieved.

·  Explaining your present (and previous) jobs to someone else may help to uncover ‘hidden’ skills etc., that you take for granted.

·  Consider any relevant experience you have acquired outside of work such as community/voluntary/leisure interests.

Do a rough draft first______

·  Do a rough draft first to avoid mistakes, repetition etc. This also gives you the opportunity to ensure that your form is well organised and relevant.

·  Set out your career history: do not go into too much detail but make sure that you explain the main features of each job that you have had. Check that the dates are correct, in the right order and explain any gaps in your employment record in the appropriate section.

General experience and further information______

·  This is where you make your case for the job. Please do not send your CV as CVs will not be put forward for shortlisting, but do support your application by attaching up to a maximum of three pages with specific reference to the person specification and job description. Gear your application to the job: don’t submit the same one for a series of jobs unless it is equally appropriate. Do not repeat your career history: pick out the skills, knowledge and experience required by the job and provide evidence that you posses them.

·  Your form should be clear, concise and well organised with examples that help to evidence your experience and competencies. Specify and be clear about your own responsibilities rather than those of your team or department.

Completing the form______

·  Type it or use ballpoint (black shows up best when copied). Ensure it is well presented and follows instructions.

Send your form in on time. Always keep a copy for reference.
