The Demands of Discipleship – Luke 14:25-15:2

THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

DATE:

TEXT: Luke 14:25 -15:2

INTRODUCTION:

The Lord Jesus Christ has called us to follow Him.

My question is - is your heart’s desire to be a true follower of the Lord Jesus Christ?

In the Bible, He sets before us what we must do if we intend to truly follow Him.

Not everyone who is identified with Christ is truly following Him.

Let’s read together Luke 14:25-15:2 -

Three times in this passage our Lord repeats a phrase.

In verse 26, the Bible says –

“He cannot be my disciple.”

In verse 27 the Bible says –

“...cannot be my disciple.”

In verse 33 the Bible says –

“He cannot be my disciple.”

] Salvation is the gift of God.

The Bible says in Ephesians 2:8-9 –

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”

When a Christian reads John 3:16 and explains the gospel to someone, that person knows very little about the Lord; they know very little about His Word.

As a concerned Christians explain that Jesus Christ loves them and died for their sin, and that He was buried and rose from the dead.

They understand that they are sinners, and God is Holy and Perfect.

He gave His Son for their sin.

They then ask the Lord Jesus to forgive their sin, and receive Him as their Saviour.

At that moment, they were born into God’s family; and became a child of God.

] In this parable though, we are dealing with discipleship.

Many people are misled about discipleship.

We try to disciple people once they trust Christ as Saviour, trying to get them grounded in the Word of God.

But to become a disciple means more than most make of it.

Our Lord gave to His followers the demands of discipleship.

] The Lord lays down the terms for discipleship.

In John 8:29-31 the Bible says –

“And He that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please Him.”
30“As he spake these words, many believed on him.”
31“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”

Continuing in His Word was not a condition of becoming a Christian, but it gave evidence of discipleship.

Some say that to be a disciple is to be a follower.

It goes beyond being just a follower - but to being like Christ.

~~~OPENING PRAYER~~~
I. THE MUST OF DISCIPLESHIP
When Christ says three times, “He cannot be my disciple,” we see what must be done in order to be His disciple.
The Word of God says in Luke 14:25 –
“And there went great multitudes with Him.”
In this passage, the Lord’s audience was not just a handful of people, but great multitudes.
He said to them in v.26 –
“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
The Lord laid down these terms.
Many who have heard this passage expounded have heard the idea that oriental languages use exaggerated contrasts.
Instead of several degrees of emotion and commitment laid out before us, love and hate are contrasted.
Do not miss the point by overemphasizing the difference between love and hate.
I certainly do not hate my mother and I do not hate my father.
I do not hate my wife or my children.
You may have heard that our love for our families should look like hate compared to our love for Christ.
But what can we find on earth that is more noble and blessed of God and more precious than our relationships with our families?
What is more precious than the love that we share in our marriage union?
What is more precious than the love that God gives in our hearts for our children?
So what does this mean?
I do not want to soften the “blow.”
In large part, it means that any times there comes a conflict between father and mother, husband and wife, son or daughter, or a conflict between any of these and Christ, …
Christ must be chosen.
This does not mean that we are to neglect our families.
Some people have taken this passage as an excuse for not being the fathers or the husbands they should be.
It does not mean that you have to win the world and let your family go to hell.
When there is a conflict or a decision to be made, when there is a tug on your heart and you know clearly what Christ desires you to do, you must choose Christ.
Our God is not confused.
When He led me to be a husband and blessed me with children, He never intended for me to abuse those I love.
The Bible says in Luke 14:27 –
“And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”
What does this mean, “bear his cross”?
It does not mean to bear the cross of Christ, but you are to bear your own cross.
Some of us think that our cross is our own personal suffering.
This is not true.
Some people think that their cross is some sort of thorn they have to deal with in life.
“Thorns” are given to us to learn that His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
II Corinthians 12:7, 9 – “And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.”
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
In Philippians 2:5-8 the Bible says -
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
6“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:”
7“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:”
8 “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
Christ emptied Himself for others.
Our cross-bearing is not sickness or a physical problem.
Cross-bearing is not someone or something that God puts in our path.
If we identify the cross with Christ, we see that Christ emptied Himself on Calvary.
Our Lord said that our cross must be borne if we are going to be His disciples.
This means emptying ourselves, pouring ourselves out for our dear Saviour.
Because He gave Himself for us, we give ourselves to Him.
For all He has for me I give all I am to Him.
THE MUST OF DISCIPLESHIP
II. THE MISSION OF THE LORD
Very few passages of Scripture in the Bible are misinterpreted more often than this passage in Luke 14:28-30.
Christ says – “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”
29“Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,”
30“Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.”
One hears many ideas about interpreting this passage.
Some say it is about a foolish person who did not take into account all that was involved in building.
This foolish person started building and could not finish.
But that is certainly not the point.
Look at vs. 31-33 –
“Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?”
32“Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.”
33“So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
What is Christ talking about?
He is speaking of “His mission”.
If you are a builder, you do not want a crew of lazy men working for you.
If you are a captain, and you are leading an army against the enemy, you do not want soldiers who will whine and cry and will not go to battle, or quit in the middle of the fight.
The Lord Jesus turned and told the multitude that was walking after Him that -
® Unless they chose Him in the hour of greatest conflict and great testing, they could not be His disciples.
® Unless they chose Him over wife, father, mother, son, and daughter, they could not be His disciples.
® Unless they were willing to empty themselves, bearing their cross, they could not be His disciples.
The Lord Jesus said, “I am a building. I am battling.
If I am going to build what I must build, I must have people who will pay the price to build it. If I am going to wage war against the Devil, I must have warriors who will work with Me and stand with Me.”
His building and battling has already been thoroughly surveyed by Him.
It “cannot” be done unless we are willing to meet His demands.
Do not complain about the cost of discipleship when you think about the mission of Christ.
We should be with Him, building until the work is done and battling until the victory is won.
God’s work is not for cowards.
It is not for someone who wants to start and stop.
Verse 33 says –
“So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
This causes us to wonder how few disciples the Lord truly has.
It makes each of us think about whether we are true disciples of Jesus Christ.
He is building; He is battling.
He must have this kind of person to build with Him and battle with Him.
III. THE MEN WHO HEAR HIM
The Bible says in Luke 14:34-35 –
“Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
Not everyone has ears to hear.
Notice as the passage continues in Luke 15:1-2 –
“Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.”
When Christ put forth this kind of challenge, the publicans and sinners said –
“That’s what we want. We know that we are nothing of ourselves. We know that we have nothing to offer except ourselves.”
When this kind of challenge goes forth, we still have the same kind of response.
Some say -“I am nothing of myself; I will give Him my all.”
Others say - “I’ll find another way. I would rather have a weaker Christianity.”
They then begin to murmur and complain.
CLOSING
As we read of the sacrifices people made who changed the world, some of them were Communist leaders; some of them were godless people.
What they were motivated by and what we are motivated by are two different worlds.
Considering the sacrifices they made to change the world, it makes me wonder what Christians are willing to do.
If the Lord Jesus is who He says He is, if heaven and hell are real places, if Christ is the only way to heaven, then we should be willing to do what He says in order to be His disciples.
Many of us are just kidding ourselves in thinking that we are serving Him.
If we are going to build with Him and battle with Him, we must be willing to be His disciples.
