The Colorado Educational Opportunity Scholarship (2018)

The Colorado Educational Opportunity Scholarship (CEOS) is funded by private donors and the Polis-Schutz Family Foundation to assist New America School (NAS) graduates who will attend post-secondary education or training. The CEOS are awarded to:

  • Applicants who have maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 while enrolled at NAS. Students with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher may be considered if they can demonstrate positive academic growth trends while enrolled at NAS.
  • Applicants with an attendance record of 85 percent or greater.
  • Applicants with involvement/volunteerism either in school or in their community beyond the general NAS requirements for all students.
  • Applicants who can demonstrate a clear intent, and general direction, for their post-secondary education.

To be considered a candidate for the scholarship, each student must:

  • Have enrolled in NAS on or prior to October 1, 2017.
  • Have applied to at least one post-secondary educational or training institution prior to applying for the CEOS
  • If selected to receive the Colorado Educational Opportunity Scholarship, the student must attend graduation
  • If selected, the student must agree to meet with a scholarship committee representative(s) at least once per year
  • If selected, the student (and if possible, parent/guardian) must attend a one hour workshop on scholarship procedures to be held in June 2018

To be considered a candidate for the scholarship students must submit:

  • Results from a standardized test demonstrating English Language proficiency level. Tests can include any or all of the following: MAP, ACT, ACCESS, CCPT, Concurrent Enrollment Grade, ACT WorkKeys Certificate, SAT
  • Results from a standardized test demonstrating level of proficiency in Mathematics. Tests can include any or all of the following: MAP, ACT, ACCESS, CCPT, Concurrent Enrollment Grade, ACT WorkKeys Certificate, SAT
  • If applicable, a copy of the student’s WorkKeys certificate
  • The student’s full transcript, including both the record of time at NAS and at previous high school(s)
  • Two letters of recommendation (can be either two letters from school personnel, or 1 from school personnel and one from an outside source. Additional letters will NOT be considered)
  • If FAFSA eligible, the student should submit a copy of the FAFSA
  • EITHER a 500-800 word typewritten essayOR a six (6) to eight (8) minute video telling the following:

What are your plans for post-secondary education or training and how have your life experiences, community or school service, and time at the New America School prepared you for this next step?

As funds permit, NAS will award up to three full CEO scholarships in 2018, one recipient/finalist for each school. A student enrolled in a four year program may receive up to $1,250 per semester/$2,500 per year/$10,000 maximum. A student enrolled in a two year program and who has completed a two year graduation plan may receive up to $2,500 per semester/$5,000 per year/$10,000 maximum. The funds may be used for tuition, fees, books or required supplies. Funds may not be used to support remedial English classes.

Beginning with the student’s graduation from NAS, the scholarship can be accessed for up to five academic years for students pursuing a bachelor degree, three academic years for students enrolled in an associate degree program, and four academic years or the length of an approved post-secondary career or trade-training program, whichever is shorter. Recipients must show their academic transcripts to the New America School Scholarship coordinator at the end of every semester; scholarship renewal will be assessed at the end of every academic year. In order to be eligible for scholarship renewal, the student must have maintained at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) for the academic year.

If students fail to maintain the above retention criteria or decide they no longer want to attend their post-secondary institution, they will no longer receive scholarship funds.

Students who will complete their academic studies at The New America School by June 2018 and wish to apply for the Colorado Educational Opportunity Scholarship (2018) should complete the attached application, and submit a written or video essay, two letters of recommendation (both letters may be from school personnel or there may be one letter from school personnel and one letter from an outside source),and the other supporting documentation listed above to the “school scholarship coordinator”by April 20th, 2018.

Each school will select one finalist and two alternates for consideration by the scholarship committee. Finalists for the award will be interviewed by an NAS scholarship selection committee. Alternates will be interviewed if additional dollars become available.Each school scholarship coordinator should attach the student’s complete transcript to his or her application packet and deliver the entire scholarship packet for the finalist and the two alternates to 925 S. Niagara St., Suite 140, Denver, Colorado 80224 by May 4th, 2018.

Note to School Scholarship Coordinator: The application packet submitted to NAS Colorado must include the application form, written or video essay, student transcript, letters of recommendation and supporting documentation. Deadline May 4th, 2018. Late scholarship applications will not be accepted. All NAS students regardless of citizenship status are encouraged to apply.
