  1. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS FROM REPRESENTATIVES
  1. CURRICULUM COMMITTEE The following items, approved unanimously by the Curriculum Committee are being proposed (supporting documents posted to AS web page):
  2. Accounting: Certificate. The program is a 32 credit non-degree program. The program is being developed in response to student demand. Such programs are widely used, effective and provide students with opportunities to enter the workforce.
  3. Science: Course Revisions. Revisions to replace MAT 008 with MAT 010/011 for the following courses: AST 110, CHE 110, CHE 118, BIO 420, BIO 425, BIO 426, PHY 110, PHY 400, SCI 150, SCI 200, SCI 510, SCI 530
  4. Music and Art: Course Revisions were presented for the following courses:

ART 181 update the course description.

ART 240 change prerequisites.

New Courseproposals were presented for the following courses:

ART 166is a three credit version ofART 161; a drawing studio course.

ART 168is a three credit version ofART 164; a life drawing studio course.

ART 183 similar to ART 181 but provides more studio time to give students the opportunity to explore subject matter. This is a 3 credit, 3 hour sculpture course.

ART 236 was created with the transfer needs of students in mind. Will replace ART 234. This course is a 3 credit, 3 hour introduction to photography course.

ART 243 presented as an alternative to ART 240. More creative thinking is required in this course. This course is a 3 credit, 3 hour basic sculpture design studio course.

ART 266 presented as an alternative to ART 261. This course is a 3 credit, 3 hour drawing studio course.

ART 268. This course is a 3 credit, 3 hour life drawing studio course.

ART 336 is a three credit version of ART 334. This course is an advanced photography course.

APPENDIX A

BMCC ACADEMIC SENATE

RESOLUTION TO INSTITUTE CREDIT FOR LIFE EXPERIENCE KNOWLEDGE (C-FLEK)

Whereas, Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) currently awards credit, waives prerequisites and allows advance placement with departmental approval for life experience knowledge;

Whereas, some form of Credit for Life Experience Knowledge (C-FLEK) has already been established within CUNY: BMCC, College of Staten Island, KingsboroughCommunity College, QueensCollege, CUNY School of Professional Studies, Medgar Evers, John Jay, and CUNY BA;

Whereas, BMCC is committed to enabling and encouraging students to make sensible and informed choices in setting their academic, career and personal goals;

Be it resolved that,

BMCC shall implement a department based, butcollege-wide, Credit for Life Experience Knowledge (C-FLEK) program; and

Departments (via their curriculum committees) shall be encouraged to evaluate their current programs to determine where awarding credit, waiving prerequisites and/or allowing advance placement based on life experience knowledge might be appropriate1; and

BMCC (via admissions or other appropriate administrative departments/programs) shall provide published information on the requirements and procedures for C-FLEK and shall actively promote C-FLEK through web and print means.

1Current college policy states that the maximum number of credits awarded as a combination of transfer credits and credits for life experience knowledge cannot exceed a total of thirty (30) credits towards a BMCC degree.

Departmental evaluations could include:

  • The total allowable number of C-FLEK for each program
  • The courses for which C-FLEK will be allowed
  • The appropriate measures for awarding credit for life experience knowledge for each identified course [such as College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Advanced Placement (AP) Scores where applicable, appropriate portfolio and/or challenge exams with clearly defined scores for awarding credit)
  • A written plan for administering the department C-FLEK program, including a protocol for collaboration between the department, admissions and the registrar.

APPENDIX B

BMCC ACADEMIC SENATE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE

RESOLUTION ON

ACADEMIC SENATE REPRESENTATIVES

TO THE ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETINGS

Whereas, the college faculty are to partake in the enrollment management according to the Bylaws;

Whereas, the Academic Senate Admissions Committee needsaccess to student data regardingrecruitment, admissions, and retention in order to carry out its charge effectively;

Whereas, the BMCC Enrollment Management Committee deals with such information, but currently includes no faculty representatives;

Whereas, the CUNY university-wide enrollment management committee has a faculty representative in the committee;

Be it resolved thatthe Enrollment management committee include a Senator and an alternate designated by the Academic Senate as voting members of the Enrollment Management committee, and

Be it further resolved thatthe chairs of the Enrollment Management committee inform the Senate’s designated representative(s) reasonably far in advance of the dates, times, places, and agendas of the meetings of the Enrollment Management Committee, and facilitate their full participation in the committee.

APPENDIX C

RESOLUTION ON THE FACULTY EXPERIENCE SURVEY

Whereas BMCC scored poorly on the UFS FES;

Whereas the Academic Senate charged an ad hoc committee to interpret the results of the FES;

Whereas the Academic Senate further charged the committee to suggest solutions to some of the problems revealed by the FES;

Whereas the FES ad hoc committee deemed there needs to be more communication between the faculty and the administration;

Resolve that the Academic Senate develop an annual evaluation of the deans, vice-presidents, and the president.

Resolve that the Academic Senate establish an archive on overrides of Academic Senate votes by the President;

Resolve that the Academic Senate recommend that the President agree to appear before the Academic Senate to explain any override of an Academic Senate vote.

Resolve that the Academic Senate recommend that the President release the college's all-funds budget (tax-levy, discretionary and soft money funds) to the Academic Senate Budget Committee annually.

APPENDIX D

Resolution On Shared Governance

Whereas, it is crucial to a policy of shared governance that the faculty, staff and administration meet regularly; and

Whereas, the Academic Senate passes resolutions that require discussion with, and implementation by, the administration and staff; be it

Resolved that the President of the college and members of the Cabinet s/he deems appropriate, meet with the Chair of Academic Senate and members of the Academic Senate Executive Committee s/he deems appropriate once each month the BMCC Academic Senate is in session.
