CHURCH CLEANING

This week Tina & Angelo Cipolla, thank you.

A REMINDER

We need your ideas. On Friday evening the 15th January we are having an ‘Ideas Evening’ when we invite you to come along in a relaxed atmosphere and have a glass of wine or a cup of tea with nibbles in the Presbytery. The evening will be from 7.00 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., but we do not expect people to stay all of the time, nor would we expect you to join our Fund Raising Group of Parishioners. All we are looking for are ‘ideas’ – no pressure. So please do drop in.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

Will all First Holy Communion parents and carers, please note that the First Communion books will be given out to the children at Masses next weekend.

FR. JOHN’S SPONSORED SLIM

After week 1, I am still on track. No cake, no biscuits, no chocolate & no sweets.

Which really means no nibbling at all, which is my downfall.

I am not going to say how much weight I have lost this week but my secretary is extremely jealous!!

I have now been given by a parishioner a ‘Fitbit’, which tells me how many steps I have taken in a day, the distance I have covered, the number of calories burnt and how many flights of stairs I have been up and down.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored my diet to date to raise for our new parish centre.

Further update next week.

Fr. John

PEACE SUNDAY

Overcome indifference and win peace’.

Next Sunday 17th January is ‘Peace Sunday’. In his World Peace Day message Pope Francis invites us to reflect on, how can we hope for peace without working to challenge the causes of violence and injustice in our world today, this is especially important in this ‘Year of Mercy’. The work of Pax Christi is based on the gospel and inspired by faith. Their vision is of a world where people can live in peace, without fear of violence in all its forms. Rooted in Catholic Christianity, they work with all who share the same values to abolish war and create communities of peace and justice. If you would like to donate to the work of Pax Christi please take an envelope from the table at the back of the Church & post back through the presbytery letter box.

SPICMA (Special Projects in Christian Missionary Areas)

SPICMA are looking for volunteers to work remotely on the following tasks:

Gift Aid Returns: They need someone who can complete the SPICMA gift aid returns on theGov.uk website.

Press Liaison: They need help to keep the Catholic press (including the Independent Catholic News) updated on the current work of SPICMA.

Mail Chimp: If there is someone who knows or is willing to learn how to operate the e-mailing Application, they could provide cover to SPICMA in this area.

Publication Design: (Annual Report, etc) they are looking for someone who would like to help, make pleasant looking and easy to read documents, based on information from their files?

Also, Facebook, Twitter and other platforms: In fact if you have a skill they can probably find a use for it. There are some copies of their Annual Report at the back of the Church that will give you up to date information about SPICMA. All the above can be done from the comfort of your own home.
SO PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!!! You can contact them via their web site:
www.spicma.org or by e-mail: or phone: 0300 302 0016

I BELIEVE IN ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH

143. Q. Is the Pope really infallible?

A.  Yes. But the Pope speaks infallibly only when he defines a dogma in a solemn ecclesiastical act (“ex cathedra”), in other words, makes an authoritative decision in doctrinal questions of faith and morals. Magisterial decisions of the college of bishops in communion with the Pope also possess an infallible character, for example, decisions of an ecumenical council. The infallibility of the Pope has nothing to do with his moral integrity or his intelligence. What is infallible is actually the Church, for Jesus promised her the Holy Spirit, who keeps her in the truth and leads her ever deeper into it. When a truth of the faith that has been taken for granted is suddenly denied or misinterpreted, the Church must have one final voice that authoritatively says what is true and what is false. This is the voice of the Pope. As the successor of Peter and the first among the bishops, he has the authority to formulate the disputed truth according to the Church’s Tradition of faith in such a way that it is presented to the faithful for all times as something “to be believed with certainty”. We say then that the Pope defines a dogma. Therefore such a dogma can never contain something substantially “new”. Very rarely is a dogma defined. The last time was in 1950. .
