CHURCH CLEANING

This week Mary Harris & Mick, thank you.

SICK AND RETIRED PRIESTS’ FUND

The annual collection for the Sick & Retired Priests’ Fund takes place next weekend. There are now 80 sick and retired priests in the diocese and many of them need support as they get older. Please give as much as you can afford as the Fund relies on donations…….and, if you pay tax, don’t forget that you can add 25p to every £1 that you give (at no extra cost to you) by completing the Gift Aid declaration on the back of the donation envelope. (You can also make a donation online at www.rcdow.org.uk/donations)

Those of you who pledged in the “Growing in Faith” campaign make a real difference and the support of those who have decided to contribute is hugely appreciated. Those who have pledged are not expected to give again.

Thank you.

CONFIRMATION 2015

Young people who will be in at least Year 9 from September 2014 are invited to give some thought to registering for Confirmation in 2015. If you attend Mass here in Ware regularly then please see Fr. John to talk about registering for the next preparation.

FOOD FOR FREE – APPLES

If you walk or drive anywhere you will see trees laden with apples. All have grown from apple cores thrown away over the years. Pick some or collect windfalls and simmer with a little water and sugar and freeze to use later in the year in pies, crumbles etc or make this easy Mary Berry Recipe.
The apples can be windfalls or even shrivelled ones left in the fruit bowl. Serve warm with ice cream or crème fraîche as a dessert, or with coffee in the morning as one would a Danish pastry, again warm, dusted with icing sugar.
225g self-raising flour,1 level tsp baking powder ,225g caster sugar, 2 large eggs, ½ tsp almond extract ,150g butter melted ,250g cooking apples, peeled and cored, 25g flaked almonds. Preheat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Lightly grease a deep 20cm loose-bottomed cake tin. Measure the flour, baking powder, sugar, eggs, almond extract and melted butter into a bowl. Mix well until blended, then beat for a minute. Spread half this mixture in the prepared tin. Thickly slice the apples and lay on top of the mixture in the tin, piling mostly towards the centre. Using 2 dessert spoons, roughly spoon the remaining mixture over the apples. This is an awkward thing to do, but just make sure that the mixture covers the centre well as it will spread out in the oven. Sprinkle with the flaked almonds.
Bake in the preheated oven for 1¼-1½ hours until golden and coming away from the sides of the tin.

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD

91. Q. But why did Jesus work miracles?

A.  The miracles that Jesus worked were signs that the kingdom of God was beginning. They expressed his love for mankind and reaffirmed his mission. Jesus’ miracles were not self-aggrandising displays of magic. He was filled with the power of God’s healing love. Through his miracles he showed that he is the Messiah and that the kingdom of God begins in him. Thus it became possible to experience the dawn of the new world: he freed people from hunger (Jn 6:5-15), injustice (Lk 19:8), sickness and death (Mt 11:5). By driving out demons, he began his victorious advance against the “ruler of this world” (meaning Satan; see Jn12:31). Nevertheless, Jesus did not remove all misfortune and evil from the world. He directed his attention principally to freeing man from the slavery of sin. His central concern was faith, which he also elicited through miracles.
