Seven Days 2011/12
Hello Again and Welcome to 'Seven Days' our weekly scribe of all things Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League & A Little Bit More.
Prior to going into the Easter weekend, Tuesday evening saw four Premier Division and two Southern Combination Cup semi finals Tuesday evening, commencing with events at Merland Rise where Banstead Athletic welcomed Wembley for the evening's entertainment. Despite being reduced to ten men a Daryl Atkins effort in the 88th minute was enough to secure victory for the visitors to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches.
Wembley appeared to be heading for their third consecutive draw until Ian Bates threaded a defence splitting pass through the Banstead rearguard and Atkins breached the offside trap to find the back of the net with a clinical finish to notch his 26th goal of the season. With a much improved performance the 'Lions' tore into their struggling hosts straight from kick-off, however they were unable to penetrate a stubborn Banstead defence. The home side hit back towards the end of the first half and kept Wembley keeper Lee Pearce quite busy leading up to the interval.
It was fairly even after the break, but in the 66th minute Paul Shelton who had been cautioned earlier for a late challenge, received his second yellow and ultimate red card, following an off the ball dispute with a home defender.
The depleted visitors had to re-organise but successfully absorbed Banstead's attacks, and then, with the game reaching the final few minutes, the deadlock was broken when Atkins struck the all important first and only goal of the evening which secured the points for the visitors.
Elsewhere Badshot Lea and Epsom & Ewell shared four goals at Weycourt in an entertaining encounter. Croydon were too good for hosts Mole Valley SCR and ran out comfortable 3-1 winners whilst South Park hit three without reply following their trip to Chalky Lane.
In the two Southern Combination Cup semi finals it was a good evening for the away teams, commencing at Westfield who were undone by three extra time goals by visitors Sandhurst Town. Despite a bright opening Westfield failed to turn first half domination into goals and they were dealt a further blow when Nick McGregor badly injured his arm on the stroke of half time. The second half was more even with both sides going close but after 90 minutes it remained goalless. Into extra time and it was the visitors who hit the all important first goal on the stroke of half time in this extra thirty minute period. Dan Jewell looked to have wrapped the game up seconds into the re-start and with Westfield having to chase the game they went even further behind when Jewell was clean through he found the target late on to compound Westfield's misery.
Facing the 'Fizzers' in this years final are Hanworth Villa who are appearing for the third year in succession following their 2-1 semi final success at Cove. Joe Johnson and a rare effort from Jim Major in the 35th and 65th minutes set them well on the way before the hosts pulled one back five minutes from time to produce a nervy finale but they held strong and more importantly held out to take their place in the final – Date of this Monday 7th May, Kick-Off 3pm.
Wednesday evening just the two games to mention, firstly at The Orchard where Feltham welcomed Frimley Green who had recently bolstered their playing squad quite considerably. A three goal opening half by the visitors set them well on the way to victory although Feltham did try to play some nice football without greatly troubling the visiting defence. The contest was as good as over 45 minutes in but Frimley added a fourth eleven minutes from time courtesy of Jordan Giddings. Despite this heavy defeat it was like it always is when you get to see Feltham at home, a very warm and friendly experience thanks to Brian, Andy and Scott who certainly know how to make you welcome – Thanks Guys.
For those unaware we as a league also have a Veterans Cup for the slightly mature folk and Wednesday evening at Westfield it was again a good night for the visitors who on this occasion were Eversley. They now face Hanworth Villa in the semi's following their 2-1 victory. I am told Hanworth Vets have booked themselves another semi-final date against a team called Garston in the national semi's. The date set for our semi-final is Wednesday 25 April.
No Friday night football to report on this week and so into the Saturday activity commencing at the 'Spectrum' where Premier Division league leaders Guildford City welcomed Epsom & Ewell, in their quest to retain the league title. Their hopes were moving in the right direction when Austin Gacheru gave them a fourth minute lead but the home side were unable to build upon this early lead and paid the price in the 78th minute when Martin Grant squared the match following a superb finish. Not suprisingly this stunned the home side and they pressed forward looking for a winner but it did not happen and it was two points dropped, the nearest to a further goal coming when Jack Guilford skewed a shot just wide. It was a very good point for the visitors and it leaves City needing one more victory to clinch the championship.
Second placed Windsor welcomed Ash United to Stag Meadow and early goals from Michael Chennels on seventeen minutes and Kyle Anthony five minutes later looked to have set the home side on the way to another three points, but Adam Cole halved the deficit 32 minutes in.
In the second half it was Ash who made the early running, looking for an equaliser and they were rewarded 68 minutes in when an infringement spotted by one of the assistants brought play back and from the subsequent free-kick the ball was knocked into the home penalty area for Scott Norris to level the contest. Joy turned to heartbreak eleven minutes later for Ash though when Yash Romeo restored the lead for the home side who followed up with a fourth roughly five minutes from the end of normal time courtesy of Ryan O'Toole, so it finished 4-2 in favour of the home side much to the delight of most of the 245 folk who were in attendance.
Third placed Egham Town went down 3-1 at Walton Road thanks to a hat-trick from Will Marlowe, Brendan Matthew scoring for the 'Sarnies' as they lost ground.
Fourth versus fifth at The Ranch where Hanworth Villa hosted Camberley Town. Past stats show that in all previous encounters involving these two sides the 'Villains' have not been able to pick up any points from their games with 'Town' but this was all to change though and at the end of play this unwanted record was to change as Hanworth ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
Colliers Wood United travelled over to South Park looking for points that would help them move away from the drop zone. Once again they defied their lowly position with goals from Mario Embalo and Chris Gregson. Kieran Lavery halved the deficit three minutes from time but 'Wood' held on to make their trip fully worthwhile.
With the situation at the bottom of the Premier Division chopping and changing at regular intervals, bottom club Banstead went down 0-1 at Merland Rise following the visit of Horley Town, Chessington & Hook had a good day following their trip to Croydon, 3-1 this one finished, Dorking took the points at Farnham Town following a good 1-0 victory and Raynes Park Vale secured another three points at the expense of visitors Badshot Lea – 3-2 this one finished and finally Premier Division wise, Wembley secured a good 3-1 victory at Sandhurst.
Division One saw Champions Guernsey hit another five without reply following the visit of Staines Lammas to Footes Lane, a goal from Matt Loaring on 14 minutes being followed six minutes later by Alex Le Prevost and then one just before half time courtesy of Glyn Dyer which gave the home side the cushion to ease a little the second period. Dom Heaume added a brace on 82 & 88 minutes to give a final score of 5-0 much to the delight of many of the 1163 spectators in attendance. Guernsey “Man of The Match” was awarded to Paul de Garis.
Warlingham, secured a 1-0 success over Cobham in the Lemon Recordings Division One Challenge Cup semi-final and can look forward to playing either Staines Lammas or Westfield who go head to head later this week. In the League Hartley were 4-2 winners at Worcester Park and in doing so secured third spot. One of the days surprises though was the 1-0 home win Farleigh Rovers secured over Eversley , Sheerwater and Bookham shared four goals and finally it was a good day for South Kilburn as they beat near neighbours C.B Hounslow 2-0 at the Vale Farm Sports Centre.
There were five Reserve section games on Saturday one of which saw leaders Farnham Town picking up another three points following their trip to C.B.Hounslow – 3-0 this one finished, while closest rivals Eversley also secured maximum points from a visit to basement club Sheerwater – 3-2 this one finished. Warlingham went down 4-0 at Westfield, Raynes Park Vale secured a good 3-0 success following their trip to Bedfont and finally Frimley Green won 2-1 following their trip to Bookham.
And so to the Bank Holiday Monday round of fixtures, any hopes of yours truly getting to a CCL match quickly evaporated thanks mainly due to a non appearance of an early morning bus and an out of action couple of cash machines, meaning the only football for me was a local UCL Division One fixture.
Therefore my round-up begins at Dorking where Premier Division leaders Guildford City who dominated the match and might have scored more than the five they did. Dan Moody netted twice in quick succession after a cagey opening twenty minutes and then a defensive mistake allowed Austin Gacheru to extend the lead to three shortly before half time.
Joel Hughes netted just after the break after connecting with a Ben Rayner free kick and just to round things off Lance Banton-Brown who came on as a sub on the hour, nipped ahead of the home keeper to score City's fifth of the game – final score 0-5.
Closest challengers for the Premier Division crown Windsor were likewise on the road, making the short trip to Egham. Kyle Anthony opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first half much to the delight of the travelling contingent and on 37 minutes Michael Chenells doubled the advantage. Hopes of a revival came Egham's way when Dale Marvell slotted home a penalty but barely three minutes later Chris Ellis restored the two goal advantage and this was how things ended 3-1 in favour of the visitors, a job really well done.
At the Shawfields Stadium Ash United got off to a perfect start against visitors Farnham Town courtesy of a Sean Davies penalty barely a minute into the contest, but the visitors looked to have turned things around when goals from Adam Wareham and Will Neville put Farnham 2-1 up before the interval. In the second half Ash pressed hard and finally got their reward when Stuart Woodhouse equalised for the home side to make it 2-2 and this was how it stayed at the end of play.
Last of my Premier Division reports come from The Moatside Ground where Epsom & Ewell welcomed Banstead Athletic and a crowd of 69 saw the home side take the spoils, courtesy of goals from James Cottee just before the interval and then Ben Hayward on 57 minutes, enough to secure a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Rounding up the rest of the Premier Division victories were secured by Cove, 4-0 at Camberley, Molesey 2-0 at Chessington & Hook, South Park, 3-1 at Horley and Hanworth Villa who thumped Wembley 5-1 at Vale Farm, last but not least Raynes Park Vale and Colliers Wood United shared four goals over at The Prince George's Field.
Having secured third spot in Division One over the weekend Hartley Wintney made the short trip over to Eversley and were too good for their hosts running out 3-1 winners and in the division's only other fixture Spelthorne Sports ran out 8-1 victors following their trip to Sheerwater.
Finally Bank Holiday Monday saw Warlingham Reserves secure third spot following a 1-0 success following their trip to Worcester Park.
