Damaged Library Books
If a library book comes home with rips or loose pages please don't fix it yourself. If you can just keep all the pieces together (rubberband or plastic bag) and return it to the library, where there are specialist tapes and glues to fix them. Thank you.
Help Wanted
To prepare new books for the library: If you are availableWednesdaymornings9-10.40am, and are Ok with tape, scissors and other sticky stuff, we'd love to have your assistance. Come and try it out, no obligation. No children please. Refreshments are included.
Just let Maree Silver-Hesseyknow:
/ Dear Parents / Caregivers,
YR5/6 Camps:
I was fortunate to visit both YR5/6 camps at Woodend recently and
saw the children really stepping up and challenging themselves.
Many thanks to MrsBoyte for her great organization and to all our parent helpers.
Rubbish:
Please encourage children to put rubbish in the bins or take it home. We are
putting together new schemes at school to ensure children learn to take care
of theirenvironment and rubbish clean up is a big part of this.
Masterplanning (Christchurch Schools Rebuild /Upgrade Programme):
Recently we submitted our Education Brief to the Ministry. This is essentially the
story of our school with regard to teaching and learning. In this document we have
captured thoughtsand ideas from teachers, parents and children about how our school buildingscan be further improved so that we can continue to provide the
very best learningfor our children. The next step is involving an architect.
Our Board are reviewing our school zone as part of the rebuild process. We are
lookingat the area in particular North of Broadhaven Ave(up to Bower Ave),
which is not currently included in our zone.I would be interested in hearing any
feedback if you have or comments on thisarea and if you think it should be
included in our school zone. We are working on a feedback consultation document
regarding our proposed school zone which we welcome your comments. We will
be sending this out next week. You are however welcome to email us if you have
anycomments prior to this being sent out.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Regards

Why Kids Read Book Series
:and you shouldn’t discourage them.
So, your child is reading the 8th, 9th, 10th Geronimo Stilton or Rainbow Fairies or Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and you are despairing that the they will never read anything else?! Reading series like these is a developmental stage that most children will go through on their way to becoming fluent readers.
Reading a series is a great way to develop confidence;
  • the characters are familiar,
  • the language is familiar,
  • so picking up another book is not a daunting experience,
  • instead they have a successful reading experience and then they want to repeat it by reading more.
At this stage more is good, it’s like training for a marathon, in the beginning stages of training it doesn’t matter that you are going around the same block again, and again and again - you are still improving. It is the same with children reading, practise improves their skills and they want to keep going.
I can guarantee that your child will not continue to only read those series exclusively for years. They may go back to them occasionally, but then it is like a cuddly, for comfort and security, before they move onto something new and exciting. I
f you truly believe it has been too long and by this, I mean over 6 months, don’t make them choose something completely different as that will most likely be detrimental. Mix it up a bit by introducing something similar, as well as their favourite, not instead of.
If you want ideas or help in where to next just talk to your child’s teacher or contact Maree Silver-Hessey in the Queenspark School Library
