Interpreting takes place in a dynamic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural environment. We must skillfully assess these as well as other parameters to ask and/or advocate for conditions that will maximize the quality of our work and ensure the highest level of access for all service recipients.
In addition, we conduct business with multiple entities, each having their own internal structures and cultures. We must know how to interface with these entities in a manner that is efficient and honors current professional standards.
In this workshop we will explore ideas and theories from psychology, sociology, communication, business and interpretation to build a framework of professional communication in which direct communication, unbiased education and genuine listening are the core tools. Participants will be given opportunities to practice these skills first hand during the workshop.
- Be able to describe theories, ideas, and practices from psychology, sociology, communication, business and interpreting that address proactive, effective communication and advocacy.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the above theories and practices through role-play, discussion and a post-test.
- Conduct a personal inventory of professional communication tools.
- Leave with a personal, customized plan for improving their professional communication tools.
Juniper Sussman, CSC, has been interpreting since 1976 with specializations in mental health, interpreting for children and ASL to English production. She has actively dedicated herself to mentorship, believing it to be the key to professional development for both new and seasoned interpreters. In addition to her work as an interpreter and a mentor, she has presented a number of workshops on topics such as message analysis, mentorship, ethics, ASL to English interpreting, cultural mediation, professional communication and diplomacy. Currently, Juniper works at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center as their lead interpreter and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Interpretation at Gallaudet University, which is also where she earned her interpreting degree in 1982.
