Co-sponsored by the University of Maryland

Department of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services

Saturday, January 22nd, 9:00-4:00

(RID: .6 CEUs, Professional Studies)

Location: University of Maryland, College Park, 0114 Shoemaker Bldg.

Accessible from the College Park metro

Instructor: Juniper Sussman, CSC

Workshop description:

Interpreting takes place in a dynamic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural environment. We must skillfully assess these as well as other parameters to ask and/or advocate for conditions that will maximize the quality of our work and ensure the highest level of access for all service recipients.

In addition, we conduct business with multiple entities, each having their own internal structures and cultures. We must know how to interface with these entities in a manner that is efficient and honors current professional standards.

In this workshop we will explore ideas and theories from psychology, sociology, communication, business and interpretation to build a framework of professional communication in which direct communication, unbiased education and genuine listening are the core tools. Participants will be given opportunities to practice these skills first hand during the workshop.

Educational Objectives:

Participants will:

- Be able to describe theories, ideas, and practices from psychology, sociology, communication, business and interpreting that address proactive, effective communication and advocacy.

- Demonstrate an understanding of the above theories and practices through role-play, discussion and a post-test.

- Conduct a personal inventory of professional communication tools.

- Leave with a personal, customized plan for improving their professional communication tools.
