The Cay Pop-Up Book

Due:

You will create a Response to Literature Pop-Up Book as your final project for

The Cay.

A Response to Literature essay is an analysis of a piece of literature in which you use

“proof” (quotes and examples!) to support what you feel about the literature.

Writing:You will write 5 paragraphs that analyze the character change in Phillip. You will use quotes to prove Phillip’s positive and negative qualities that you’ve already recorded in your dialectical journal!

Drawing:You will create2 separate “pop-up” scenes to accompany your 5 paragraphs.

You will learn how to write the essay, construct the book, and create pop-ups all in class.

General Reminders and Guidelines:

Content:

*You must use two differentquotes for each body paragraph.

*When showing the change in Phillip, you are not allowed to use “grateful to ungrateful,” “selfish to unselfish,” etc. Each quality/trait must be an original antonym from the others.

Effort and Responsibility:

*Most of class time will be spent on the essay and putting the book together. Drawings and final drafts will need to be worked on at home in addition to in class. It is important to keep up at home when required or you will be behind class instruction on the project the following day!

*TwoAccurate Scenes – 2 pop up figures per scene, in color, scene represents quote(s) and/or traits discussed

*Neatness and Creativity (Remember - no pencil or highlighter!)

*Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation(including proper quotation marks, pg. #’s, etc!)

The first body paragraph will discuss what you think are Phillip’s most obvious, defining negative qualities. What do you believe best represents Phillip negative qualities in the first half of the story? Racist? Prejudiced? Weak? Dependent? Immature? Ignorant? Naïve?

In the following two paragraphs, you will need to relate to the negative quality(s) youchose to use in the first body paragraph to show the transformation of Phillip’s feelings towards Timothy. For example, if you chose a quality such as racist, you need to show how he grew out of that. Is he now tolerant? Open minded? Accepting?
