The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME) is a physician-sponsored, non-profit health care quality improvement organization.

CCME has been designated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) for North and South Carolina. CCME works in partnership with all components of the health care system, on behalf of physicians, other providers, patients, and purchasers to improve the quality of health care delivery for everyone in the Carolinas. One of CCME’s greatest strengths is the number of alliances it has developed over the years. CCME works collaboratively with more than 50 associations, state agencies, health care alliances and non-profit organizations in North and South Carolina. These partnerships span every health care setting and provider group. They have resulted in measurable improvement in the quality of health care for all patients, especially for the most aged and fragile of citizens.

CCME also serves as a utilization review agency for Medicaid in North Carolina, ensuring that Medicaid patients are receiving the best possible care.

By joining CCME, you demonstrate your support of efforts to improve the quality of health care for all Carolinians. Your membership shows that you support the work that CCME is conducting on your behalf and on behalf of patients. Members in CCME get the most valuable tool available to help improve the quality of care for their patients—information!Members receive the most up-to-date information available on health care quality in a format that is concise, convenient and understandable to all physicians. CCME focuses on how the information might affect the physician in his or her practice. Currently, the primary format to reach members is Quality Partners Online, a free, e-newsletter focusing on quality of care issues. In addition, a directory of cooperative quality improvement projects is available to members. The CCME website ( will carry membership-focused information, such as news on quality developments, links to other quality-related webpages, and more. Members also have an opportunity to become CCME Physician Consultants, who provide expert medical advice and oversight to CCME’s quality improvement and review staff.

There is no cost to join. All we ask is that you take advantage of the resources that we offer to you. The time commitment is up to you. CCME will make available to our members as much information about quality improvements in health care as possible. How much you utilize depends on you. CCME wants to be the source of information for physicians on quality improvement in health care in the Carolinas. CCME wants to be the place to which physicians turn when they have questions about health care quality.

CCME is an organization of physicians for physicians interested in maintaining and strengthening the quality of care for Carolina citizens. Assuring the quality of care by physicians in North and South Carolina is one of the primary roles for all Carolina physicians. As an independent organization, CCME has the experience, the resources and the staff to work effectively to achieve this goal. CCME has no other goals than to improve the quality of care for patients in the Carolinas. This allows CCME to provide physicians objective information and to work with them to improve patient care.
