THE CAROLE JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Carole Johnson Memorial Scholarship established in 1963 by friends to memorialize a young woman who was devoted to a variety of academic, community, and extra-curricular activities at George Washington High School. The purpose of the fund is to recognize young women who show promise of future achievement and service. Selections of students for the Carole Johnson Memorial Scholarships isbased on Christian character, unselfish service to others, potential for future contributions to the human community, extra-curricular activities, academic achievement and personality. Scholarship recipients are students who best exemplify Carole Johnson’s commitment to academics, school and community service activities, and dedicated to unselfish service to others.

Eligibility:The student must:

  • Be a senior lady graduating from GW June 2015
  • Demonstrate outstanding commitments to academics, school and community activities, unselfish service to others and potential for future contributions to the human community
  • Plan to enroll in an accredited four-year college or university in the continental United States the following academic year

Award Amount:$7,700 approximately

AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION - DANVILLE CHARTER CHAPTER

THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY DAN RIVER UNIT 325 SCHOLARSHIP

The American Legion Auxiliary Dan River Unit 325 offers a scholarship to a direct descendant; child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child or a child/children of a spouse by prior marriage or dependent as defined by the United States of America Armed Services for Veterans of the United States military and National Guard.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Plan to attend an accredited college/university
  • Be a citizen of the United States and legal resident of Virginia or North Carolina

The Wednesday Club provides merit scholarships for senior students in Danville and Pittsylvania County public schools.

  • Be planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree from a college or university

Award amount:$1,000

URW COMMUNITY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP

Eligibility:The student must be:

  • A graduating senior
  • Entering an accredited college, university or other recognized institution of higher learning
  • Member of the URW Community Federal Credit Union for 12 months

Award Amount:$500.00

GRANVILLE P. MEADE SCHOLARSHIP

The Granville P. Meade Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. This scholarship provides awards to seniors to attend one of Virginia’s public or private colleges or universities.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a graduating senior
  • Upon graduation attend a Virginia public or private public university or college
  • Have financial need
  • Have demonstrated academic achievement

Award Amount:$2,000 per year renewable for four years

STAN PARKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – ROANOKE VALLEY WRESTLING ASSOCIATION

The Roanoke Valley Wrestling Association awards an annual scholarship in memory of Stan Parker.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a senior from the Blue Ridge, River Ridge, Three Rivers, Pioneer, Piedmont, Western Valley or one of the independent schools of Roanoke Catholic or North Cross
  • Attend a junior college, state or private college, or university
  • Be active in wrestling and student activities or the son or daughter of a coach, official, or connected to wrestling.
  • Have maintained a “C” average

THE ARMENIAN EDUCATION CENTER /SCHOLARSHIP

The Armenian Education Center provides a scholarship to one Virginia high school student. The competition is open to ninth through twelfth grade students.

The Tobacco Region Scholarship Program-Southside provides assistance with tuition for eligible students who live within the approved localities of the Southside Virginia region.

THE BOOKER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Booker Award is granted yearly to two former Glenwood Elementary School students who graduate from the Danville Public High School System. This award named in memory of Jack and Ilah Tate Booker, who valued education, and in honor of their daughter, Margaret Booker Gabal, a dedicated educator.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Have attended Glenwood for a minimum of three years
  • Have a GPA of 2.0

Award Amount:Two - $1,000 renewable for three additional years

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION SCHOLARSHIPS (Guidance Selected)

Complete a Local Universal Scholarship Application (LUSA) for each scholarship of interest and return to Ms. McKinnie in the Guidance by February 9, 2015. The LUSA is located in the scholarship file in Guidance and on the GWHS website. Write the name of the scholarship on the appropriate section of the LUSA and return to Ms. McKinnie by noon February 9, 2015. Please be aware that in addition to the LUSA you must provide a transcript and letter of recommendation for each scholarship.

  • Irene L.Pritchett Memorial Scholarship – for qualified black graduates from the Danville and Pittsylvania County

THE WEBSTER AND ELIZABETH MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Webster and Elizabeth Marshall Award is given annually to a student who graduates from a high school in the Danville Public School System and is accepted to Averett University. The award is named in the memory of Webster Marshall and in honor of Elizabeth Marshall, to fulfill their desire to support education by assisting Danville Public Schools graduates who wish to continue their education at Averett University.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Graduate from a high school in the Danville Public Schools
  • Attend Averett University
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA

Award Amount:To be determined and may be renewed annually for up the three additional years

The Virginia Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O) Chapters provides funds for VSSF scholarships.

  • Attend as a full time undergraduate, an accredited Virginia school of higher education

HUGHES MEMORIAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Hughes Memorial Foundation awards scholarships to individuals for higher education or job training with preference given to needy and/or disadvantaged children living in the Virginia counties of Pittsylvania, Halifax, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Campbell, Bedford, Franklin, Henry and Patrick; the North Carolina counties of Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, and Person; and the cities of Virginia and North Carolina that are located geographically within those counties. Needy and/or disadvantaged children in these counties who are linear offspring of Hughes Memorial Home when it was an orphanage receive preference for scholarship funds.

VIRGINIA MAYFLOWER SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a resident of Virginia or
  • Be related to a resident of Virginia or
  • Be a member of junior member of the Virginia Mayflower Society or
  • Be related to a member of the Virginia Mayflower Society
  • Have a GPA of 3.0
  • Be sponsored by a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the Commonwealth of Virginia or by one of the applicant’s current teachers.

BUICK ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program funded by the GM Foundation provides scholarships to high school seniors and undergraduates who plan to major in a field of study that focuses on engineering, technology, design or business with an interest in the automotive industry. The foundation will award scholarships, including renewable scholarships of up to $25,000 per year. The scholarship program seeks to help those who put forth the effort and find success both in and out of the classroom, yet are unable to attend college without financial assistance.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Have financial need
  • Have participation and leadership in community and school activities, work experience and interest in pursuing a career in the automotive industry

Award Amount:Up to $25,000 renewal up to four years for 100 first-time freshman and $2,000 one-time awards for an additional 1,000 students.

The Virginia High School League (VHSL), in partnership with its corporate sponsors offers scholarships for college bound seniors.

Andrew Mullins Courageous Achievement Award

The Andrew Mulling Courageous Achievement Award recognizes a female or male student who had made significant contributions to one or more VHSL athletic and/or academic activities. The student currently has or has overcome a serious illness, injury or disability, has overcome great adversity, such as challenging social or home situations in a positive way; or other extraordinary situations, where the student has displayed tremendous courage against overwhelming odds. The award requires the student to have (1) a minimum 3.0 GPA (2) won at least one varsity letter or the equivalent in the VHSL sport/academic activity, involvement in other school sponsored activities, and (3)involvement in activities outside of school (work, charities, etc.). Allstate Foundation/VHSL Achievement Award (Athletic)

Virginia High School League Savage Scholarship Award

Each year the VHSL awards $500 to one college-bound senior who has participated and excelled in school publications (magazine, newsmagazine, newspaper and yearbook) for at least two years and has demonstrated outstanding personal qualities such as leadership, writing proficiency, design aptitude, creativity, teamwork and character.The applicant must plan to attend an accredited college, university or educational institution beyond the secondary school level.
