Welcome back to school! We are excited to begin the new ESL school year with our new group of English teachers.

This year, you can expect to see your child coming home with homework every day. It will officially start on Monday September 4th.
Homework assignments are meant to be given as EXTRA practise only, and will not be used as an academic report card mark. This regular homework practice will teach your children key learning skills like responsibility and time management.

We recommend you to establish a daily homework and reading routine at home, so that your child will learn to complete homework independently.

What will the homework look like?

On Monday, your child will receive a Homework Board. This is a grid of language activities. Students can choose 1 activity to complete per night.
We strongly recommend that students do not try to rush to complete all the options on one night. Incorporating a daily English practice at home will help to promote responsibility, better time management, and routines. On Friday, four of the homework board options should be completed and submitted to the teacher. The teacher will collect these books and return them on the next Monday.

On Fridays, students will receive a reading assignment to complete in their Weekend Homework book. Here students will be given a story to read and respond to from Raz Kids.

We will teach students how to spatially organize their work neatly in their books. It is important for students to understand how the presentation and appearance of their work also communicates a message.
For homework, students are required to write the date for every night and to use the appropriate title for each homework option. We will also review proper writing form of letters and punctuation according to the grade level expectations.

What if my child cannot complete the homework?

In cases where your child struggles to complete the homework, please encourage them to try their best. You may help your child with homework, however most should be done independently.
If your child cannot complete the homework, please sign the homework or write a note so that we know to give your child some extra support.

Every week there will be a newsletter posted for you in both English and Mandarin. Please use this to see the next week’s new words and social conventions to review with your child over the weekend. This can familiarize them for each new topic on Mondays.

Agenda Books
Agendas are used for communication between teacher and parents only.

There will be 3 workbooks used in the program.
The Blue Book is the Daily Journal. This book stays in class for students to practise creative writing using the social conventions of the week.

The Green Book is the Daily Homework Book. This book will be brought home every day (Monday through Thursday) to complete the homework. Your child should complete and return this book by Friday morning.

The Yellow Book is the Weekend Homework book. This book will be sent home on Friday only. Please have your child do the recommended reading Raz Kids homework in this book. Then, please have your child return the book on Mondays.

In order to support your child in this program, please reassure them that trying their best is of most importance. Students often strive to know the correct answer. However, as teachers we value the struggles and challenges that are inevitable when learning a new language. So please help support your child to problem solve when they encounter difficulties, rather than simply providing the correct answer. This year, we hope to continue to build resilience in your child as they learn English as a second language.

Parent’s Day!

Parent’s Day is on Saturday September 2nd. During the parent presentation, you will meet one of the ESL teachers who will discuss these items further. We look forward to meeting you all!

Sincerely,

The ESL Teachers
