The Superintendent presented the following positive reports from the schools:

Joe Hoskins, Principal of Burnsville Elementary, reported that they had parent volunteers

(John and April Keenen) come into the school this month and do volcano experiments with Pre-

K through 6th grade classes and discussed periodic table and chemical reactions. Mr. Keenen will be coming into the school other times throughout the year and doing other hands-on science experiments with the students. They also had their second AR celebration at the beginning of the month with all of the students that met or exceeded their AR goal for the 2nd nine weeks and the number of students increased from the 1st nine weeks. This is evidence that students are reading more.

Tim Via, Principal of Davis Elementary, reported that they received $2,000 of AR books for their library. They identified areas of need and filled those needs. He also said that a crew of parent volunteers helped clean a large storage area which created a much neater area and freed up needed storage.

Joe Dooley, Principal of Flatwoods Elementary, reported that Anne Beninghof will provide school and district administrators a myriad of co-teaching styles to assist teachers in initiating effective co-teaching practices and/or assist in refining approaches teachers are already implementing. She will review practical evidence-based methods employed to provide instruction that is differentiated for all students and designed to improve academic outcomes. in Bridgeport. He also said that they were doing Let’s Dance interactive dance videos during the after-school BLAST program.

Linda Sears, Principal of Frametown Elementary, reported that the recently implemented

RenPlace is much more effective. They can now streamline their lesson plans and reporting process for Walk to Success. She also reports that the Community Care Clinic is awesome. While they don’t want students at school sick, they were able to see 27 sick students on the Monday they were at Frametown. Ms. Sears feels it would be great to have them more often.

Jessica Pierson, Principal of Little Birch Elementary, reported that they have started a student of the month program that recognizes outstanding students from each grade. They are recognized in the entryway of the school for everyone to see as well as in the classroom. She also says that their Walk to Success groups have switched to RLA and have now incorporated Kindergarten and First Grades.

Gail Balcourt, Principal of Sutton Elementary, reports that the Principal’s Honor Roll has doubled since the first nine weeks. The Principal’s Honor Roll involves absences (3 or fewer), good grades and good behavior. Their 5th and 6th graders act as role models and peer tutors to their PK, K, 1 and 2 students during lunch and silent reading time.

Denver Drake, Principal of Braxton County Middle School reports that their last IPI Coding of December 7, 2014 showed a drop in Ones and Twos from October and an increase in Threes, Fours, Fives and Sixes. For Sixes, they went from 7% to 16%. Mr. Drake also says that parents are improving in sending in notes for student absences. However, the recent flu has really shot their attendance percentage.

Tony Minney, Principal of Braxton County High School reports that the senior ranking is finished and the top ten students are: #1 Lindsey Keplinger, #2 Grace Skidmore, #2 Wesley Skidmore, #4Madison Oney, #5 Hannah Given, #6 Jessica Ellis, #6 Matthew Lemon, #6 Jordan Utt, #9 Destiny Shaver and #10 Sarah Mallory (yes that’s correct; no #3, #7 or #8). Mr. Minney also reported that the students really like the new Electrical Technology Instructor, Mr. Francisco!

Superintendent Dilly also discussed the RESA meeting and some of the bills.

The Braxton County Head Start 2013-14 Program Report to the Public was discussed.

Dave Hoover moved and Van Carr seconded to adjourn.

The meeting adjourned at 8:16 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the Braxton CountyBoard of Education will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Davis Elementary School, 113 Fifth Street, Gassaway, WV at 5:00 p.m.
