What is the Bonny Method of “Guided Imagery and Music”

The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a music-assisted psychotherapy approach and the most renowned receptive music therapy method worldwide. Itis a creative process where imagery is evoked during music listening. Music stimulates and sustains a dynamic unfolding of inner experiences, through images, feelings, senses, thoughts or memories, thus offering many possibilities for changes in mood and physiological effects in the body. Imagery varies from multilayered images to unprocessed sensory, bodily, and affective memories. Images are healing agents of BMGIM, and symbolic images integrate autobiographical, emotional, archetypal, and transpersonal processes of the mind. They represent both problematic and resource aspects of the psyche. Imagery of inner resources is an integral part of BMGIM, and the process has positive existential outcomes in addition to symptom relief.

Eligibilityfor application

This introductory seminar is open to anybody interested in the GIM method, without any particular skills required. However, the full training program is geared toward mental health professionals (psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, music/art therapists, etc) with an interest to incorporate receptive music therapy techniques as basic or complementary tools in their clinical practice. It is designed for professionals with clinical experience with adults or adolescents with a wide range of psychological or psychiatric conditions as well as from allied fields like oncology, palliative care, perinatal psychology, family therapy, quality of life, self-growth, team building, etc. Participants from other professional backgrounds, (e.g. musicians, educators) who wish to complete the full training program, will be accepted under certain conditions and the admission is upon the discretion of the primary trainers, following evaluation.

Introductory seminar in Guided Imagery & Music (Cyprus: October 26th-28th, 10.00-18.00)

Course objectives

General:This course will introduce students to the Bonny Method of GIM and will satisfy the requirements for the Association for Music and Imagery and the European Network of GIM introductory training course.

Instructional: Theoretical and experiential learning will be woven throughout the three days. Students will:

  1. Be introduced to the historical influences on GIM
  2. Comprehend the therapeutic effects of music and imageryin clinical practice
  3. Explore models of states of consciousness
  4. Become familiar with the fundamental introductory music programs of this method
  5. Be introduced to simple relaxation and guiding techniques
  6. Be introduced to clinical applications, adaptations and modifications useable in clinical settings
  7. Discuss ethical considerations and contra-indications
  8. Experience practice sessions in group and in the role of therapist/client.

The Full training program in GIM

For engaged participants, this introductory course will lead to a full professional training course consisting of 24 days of training, organised in blocks of six 4- day seminars over a period of approximately 3 years. This introduction course is compulsory for those who wish to continue to full accreditation. The professional training course of the European Bonny Method GIM Training Program is approved by the international Association for Music and Imagery(AMI) based in the USA ( and is in line with the educational standards of AMI and the European Network of GIM (ENGIM). Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as Fellows of AMI and ENGIM and get recognition as registered GIM therapists.
