The Bible

The Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit. It teaches the truth about God and man. It is a record of what God himself has said and done, that we wouldn’t otherwise know eg to tell you what Jesus said and did, and how to follow him. So the Bible is the best way of knowing about God.

Conversion:

In a conversion experience, you suddenly realise that God does in fact exist. This makes you live your life in a whole new way – for God and with God. Eg In AD 50, the Jew Saul saw the resurrected Jesus while he was on his way to arrest and imprison Christians for being Christians. His experience of Jesus convinced him that Jesus is in fact the Lord. As a direct result of this experience, he changed from being an enemy of Christians, to become one of the greatest Saints and Christian teachers. So a conversion experience is the best way of coming to know God.

Personal Relationship with God/ Jesus

You have a close relationship with Jesus/ God. When you pray, you feel His presence close to you. You experience His peace and love. You carry this feeling with you in your day to day life. You feel His love and mercy especially close to you after you ask his forgiveness for doing something wrong. So knowing God through personal experience is the best way of knowing God.

Church tradition:

When you see other people praying, taking communion, going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, it makes you see how important God is, and how real, in the lives of so many people. The way God is worshipped and preached in the Church shows you what God is like. Eg going to Mass shows us how much God loved us, to give His life for us. So knowing God through the Church is the best way of knowing God.

History:

Throughout history, God has from time to time appeared to certain individuals in a dramatic way. eg when He appeared to Moses in the burning bush and helped the Jews escape from slavery in Egypt. Also, when He sent His own Son Jesus to be born on earth as a human being. God’s intervention in history has had a huge impact – persuading many people to put their faith in Him, and getting to “meet” God and see what sort of God He is. So knowing what God has done in history is the best way of knowing what kind of God we have.

Nature:

The amazing way that the earth, unique among all other planets, is perfectly made to support life, and the incredible beauty and design of the world, its variety and the way it is organised makes us stop in wonder and reflect on the existence of a Creator who made all this happen. Nature is a “book” that reveals God’s beauty and love for all his creation. Anyone can step out into nature and see this. So nature is the best way of getting to know God because anyone can step out into nature and wonder in amazement at its beauty.

Miracles: wisdom, beauty, care and design.

Miracles prove that there is an all-powerful, loving God who occasionally uses His power to do good to his creatures who have faith in Him. Miracles can’t be explained by science – science says miracles are impossible as the world should only follow natural scientific laws. The greatest miracle of course is Jesus rising from the dead to show us that eternal life is possible, and that it is about coming home to God. So miracles are the best way of knowing God because they show us His love and care for us.
