The benefits of the Optum Transplant COE network

Selecting a medical center for an organ or bone marrow transplant can be a very complex process. That’s why CUSTOMER NAME provides plan participants with access to the Optum Transplant Centers of Excellence (COE) network, the nation’s leading transplant network.

Optum’s Transplant COE network ensures superior clinical quality, offers broad national access, provides deep contractual discounts, and controls cost variation. It consists of 750 transplant programs within 144 medical centers across the country.

If you or an eligible family member should need a transplant, Optum will assist UMR – our medical third-party administrator – in helping you and your physician select a transplant center of excellence that meets your specific needs.

The evaluation process

Optum’s evaluation includes a detailed process designed to assess the quality of a medical center’s transplant programs. Only the highest quality transplant programs are contracted as Optum transplant providers.

Each transplant program must submit updated information each year in order to remain a participant in the Optum Transplant COE network. This annual process ensures that all programs continue to meet the strict quality standards for which they were originally selected.

The following is an example of the information reviewed by Optum when evaluating a transplant program for inclusion in the network:

·  Transplant Volumes and Outcomes – How many transplants have been performed at the medical center? What is the survival rate for patients that have been transplanted at this medical center?

·  Transplant Team and Experience – Who are the members of the transplant team? What experience do they have in transplantation? How many years have they been performing transplants? Where were they trained?

·  Support Services – How well does the transplant program work with the patients, their families and referring physicians during the transplant process? Is there adequate housing for families coming from out of town? Are there support groups for transplant patients?
