Dear AP Biology Student!

It is time to begin to learn a little bit about the upcoming AP biology course you have signed up for! We will be using the website Schoology.com throughout the year. I am asking that you get a head start with it! Your assignment for this summer will be split into three parts:

  1. Part one – schoology DUE BYAUG 5th
  2. Sign up for the AP biology 2016-2017course on schoology.com
  3. If you do not have a schoology account then you must first create one; if you do have an account the you must simply enroll in the course
  4. The course code is3FPDS-79D5P I have set it up so that I must accept you, so you will not be able to instantly move on…
  5. Introduce yourself to the class
  6. On schoology I would like you to make an announcement (in our course) telling everyone a little about yourself. Please include the following information
  7. Your name
  8. The grade you will be entering
  9. Why are you excited about the course?
  10. What is your biggest fear of the course?
  11. Part two – Graphing a statistics review DUE BY September 2nd (this is the first Friday of school)
  12. For this part of your summer assignment, you will be review basic math and graphing terms to be sure you have an understanding of this material
  13. The assignment can be found on schoology in the summer assignment folder. If you do not have a printer you may complete this on your own graph paper.
  14. Part three - Back to school supplies - DUE BYAUGUST 30th
  15. Please be prepared with the following school supplies that will be used for this course only. The sooner in the first week you have them, the less work you will have to re-do later!
  16. Quad composition book – available at staples and office depot. Also available at the school store. (These are the ones with graph paper pages!)
  17. 4 function calculator – NOT scientific or graphing!
  18. Blue or black pens – all lab notebook work will need to be done in pen
  19. 3 ring binder – we call this our tool box. We will fill it with many tools!
  20. Part Four – Creating your BILL – DUE BY AUGUST 30TH
  21. BILL--The Biology Interactive Learning Log
  22. Our ISN is called a Biology Interactive Learning Log, and we will use it daily. On any given day, we could be doing one of the following things in our notebook:

 Solving practice problems

 Interpreting graphs or diagrams

 Creating graphic organizers or concept maps about biology content

 Writing practice free response questions

  1. To create your BILL, you will need a MEAD/FIVE star HEAVY DUTY (Plastic Cover) spiral 5 subject notebook. These notebooks are the most durable spiral notebooks – so please make sure you get a high quality one to ensure that your notebook does not fall apart.
  2. Decorate theCOVERof your BILL with a collage of some sort that representsyou. I recommend that you cover the front of your notebook with clear packing tape once you have completed the cover to add durability, but also to protect the collage you make.

Please contact me if you have any questions via email or schoology!

EXAMPLE: If it is an internal part to an organism such as “tendon”, you don’t have to dissect out your little brother’s Achilles tendon and take a picture of it. A photo of his heel, and what the tendon does would suffice, but you must apply the term to the specimen you find and briefly explain in your document how this specimen represents the term.
