SMART GOALS

The objective of MUS 475 is to provide students with opportunities to apply skills and knowledge gained throughout their course of study at WJU. To this end, each student is required to prepare three to five written goals, providing an organized, operational and measurable pathway to meet thisobjective. In preparing the goals, the studentwill describe specific things that he or she hopes to accomplish during the tenure of the internship experience. SMART goals include a quantitative or qualitative base from which to evaluate the degree to which success is being achieved. In addition, this information will provide a foundation from which the learner as well as the Site Supervisor will operate, and from which the Internship Director and Department Chairperson can assess the progress of the student along the way.

SMART GOALS FORMAT

Each of the goals must be written using the SMART format, answering the following questions.

  • Specific– What is to be created, learned, practiced, gained orincreased?
  • Measurable – How much or how many?
  • Achievable – Is it realistic given the student’s present knowledge, resources and time constraints?
  • Reviewable – Can we know when the task has been achieved or completed?
  • Time Defined – When will it be done or completed?

EXAMPLES

SMART

By the end of the internship experience, I will have acquired enough knowledge and skill to operate and control the soundboard at RocklinCommunityChurch for at least three different services.

This goal is SMART. It tells “what is to be gained” (knowledge and skill to operate and control the soundboard at RocklinCommunityChurch). It tells “how much” (enough to run it for at least three different services). Assuming that the student will be spending the required amount of time at the internship site, and that the soundboard is not extensively complex, the goal is probably achievable. Note again, the goal is not to achieve knowledge enough to run anysoundboard, but the one at RocklinCommunityChurch. Similarly, the goal is not to master the board in its entirety, but to know enough to run it for at least three services, thus making it reviewable. Everyone involved from the student and Site Supervisor to the Internship Director and Department Chairperson can know if the goal has been achieved. Finally, it gives a deadline (by the end of the internship experience).

SMART

I will practice planning, producing and leading worship for four (4) regular, Sunday services at ProvidenceMethodistChurch by April 29.

This goal is SMART. It tells “what is to be practiced” (planning, producing and leading worship). It is measurable (forfour -4- services). The goal seems quite achievable given the sixteen-week parameter and the foreknowledge and preparation provided through WJU. It is reviewable: one can know if four services have been completed. It is time defined (by April 29).

NOT SMART

To obtain a deeper understanding of worship theology and history.

This goal is not SMART. While it does tell what is to “be gained” (understanding of worship theology and history), the scope is too broad. Volumes have been written about both worship theology and history. The goal could be made more specific by defining what portion of worship theology or history (For example –Baptist Worship History or Theology). In addition, the scope could be made measurable and achievable by quantifying the desired outcome. (I will be able to identify five (5) significant events in Baptist worship history and five (5) distinctives of Baptist worship). Such an approach would make the goal measurable, achievable, and reviewable. The number five (5) makes the goal measurable. One can most assuredly know if five facts have been listed. In addition, while attaining a knowledge of all of Worship History or even Baptist Worship History is beyond the scope of the internship, discovering five (5) facts or distinctives is completely within the realm of possibility. Finally, the present writing of this goal does not tell when the goal will be completed. SMART goals give a deadline (by March 1st or by the end of the semester). Sometimes when one is working with many goals, giving each a deadline along the way makes the objective more manageable or assigns priority by telling what will be done first.

PRACTICE

Use the template below to assist you in writing your internship goals.

GOAL #1

  • Specific – What is to be created, learned, practiced, gained, increased or decreased?
  • Measurable – How much or how many?
  • Achievable – Is it realistic given the student’s present knowledge, resources and time constraints?
  • Reviewable – Can we know when the task has been achieved or completed?
  • Time Defined – When will it be done or completed?

GOAL #2

  • Specific – What is to be created, learned, practiced, gained, increased or decreased?
  • Measurable – How much or how many?
  • Achievable – Is it realistic given the student’s present knowledge, resources and time constraints?
  • Reviewable – Can we know when the task has been achieved or completed?
  • Time Defined – When will it be done or completed?

GOAL #3

  • Specific – What is to be created, learned, practiced, gained, increased or decreased?
  • Measurable – How muchor how many?
  • Achievable – Is it realistic given the student’s present knowledge, resources and time constraints?
  • Reviewable – Can we know when the task has been achieved or completed?
  • Time Defined – When will it be done or completed?

GOAL #4

  • Specific – What is to be created, learned, practiced, gained, increased or decreased?
  • Measurable – How much or how many?
  • Achievable – Is it realistic given the student’s present knowledge, resources and time constraints?
  • Reviewable – Can we know when the task has been achieved or completed?
  • Time Defined – When will it be done or completed?
