THE AVENUES TO HOST UNIQUE INDOOR POLE VAULT COMPETITION
(JACKSONVILLE, FL) February 7, 2015 - The Jacksonville Athletic Club is proud to partner with The Avenues to present the 2015 Avenues Mall Vault, a pole vault competition set inside of the shopping mall. This unique event will take place on Saturday, February 7, at 10 a.m. on the lower level in Center Court.
“The idea behind this event is two-fold,” said Eli Sunquist, director of the Jacksonville Athletic Club. “We want to bring exposure to track and field by bringing this exciting sport to the public, as well as give pole vaulters a unique opportunity to compete. By having an event like this, we can present vaulters of all ages and abilities with the opportunity to vault in a non-traditional setting, which is a great way to experience the sport.”
There has only been one other mall vault competition in the United States, at the Jordan Creek Town Center in Des Moines, Iowa. This event was in conjunction with the Drake Relays, and was limited to only 12 pole vaulters. The Iowa Mall Vault will not be held in 2015, making The Avenues Mall Vault the only competition of its kind in 2015.
The Avenues will have a specific area blocked off all day for the competition, but athletes will be just feet away from shoppers, providing plenty of entertainment. The event will have an announcer, DJ and top athletes from around the Southeast compete for the chance to win.
“The entire management staff at The Avenues has been tremendous,” Sunquist added. “They loved the idea, and have been hugely supportive of the event, which we can’t wait to bring to the public. It will be great publicity for the sport, the mall and the city of Jacksonville!”
