Assignment #1: Due Monday, September 18

The Assignment is worth 20 points.

The goal of this assignment is to compare similar products through the nutrition label to make wiser choices. This assignment is to be done individually and submitted on the deadline date. (Please check the syllabus regarding submission of late assignments.)

There are various components of this assignment. All parts must be completed to receive full credit. Please make certain that the assignment is submitted in its entirety.

1.  Cut out the labels, or photograph, 4 similar items that you decide to compare. Examples may include 4 different types of cereals, 4 different types of granola bars (or even protein bars), 4 different types of pasta sauce, or even 4 different types of packaged cookies. They MUST be similar so that there is a direct comparison between the two.

THIS IS AN EXERCISE IN READING NUTRITION LABELS, AS IF YOU WERE SHOPPING. DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM THE INTERNET.

2.  On one or more pieces of paper, attach the nutrition labels, or print the photographs of each of the 4 different products.

3.  Label each nutrient label with A, B, C, or D so that you can refer to each on the accompanying table. Also, indicate the product type. For example, you can “Product A”, “Product B”, etc. In addition, they should be labeled as “cereal”, “pasta sauce” etc.

4.  Answer the following questions on the grid/table provided. Each answer should be a minimum of one sentence, and at most a few sentences. Please be certain that you are answering the questions completely. If there is insufficient information for you to know the answers, please indicate so on the form.

5.  Since I am reading each of your written submissions, please write clearly.

a.  List the name and/or brand of each item.

b.  What is the serving size?

c.  How many servings do you think YOU normally eat of this product?

d.  How many calories are in each serving?

e.  How many calories from fat are in each serving?

f. What types of fats are in the product: Saturated fats (g), Trans fat (g)

g.  How much protein is in each serving?

h.  List the different types of sugars in the product from the ingredient list e.g. sugar, corn syrup

i.  What is the total carbohydrate in each serving? How much sugar? Other carbohydrates?

j.  How much salt is in each serving?

k.  Which of the 4 would be best for someone trying to lose weight? WHY?

l.  Which would you consider to be the healthiest? Take into consideration
