Student Rank/Match Process Guidelines
How it Works
The Asper Co-op Program utilizes the Rank/Match process to identify hiring’s. This process aims to assure that most students will be placed, and therefore, employers will receive a student of their choice.
1. Students interview with employers.
2. After the last interview, the student decides which employers they would consider working for. From that list, the student ranks the employers by preference. Therefore, a #1 ranking would indicate an overall favourite; a #2 would be second favourite, etc. If a student has a concern about not wanting to working for a particular employer, they are to speak with a co-op coordinator before submitting their ranking form.
3. By ranking an employer, a student commits to accepting an offer and therefore working for that employer without exception.
4. When the employer has finished all interviews, the employer will submit ranks of the students. If an employer does not wish to hire a student, that student will not receive a rank.
5. The Co-op Office will compile the rankings and will match employers to students. A #1 student rank and a #1 employer rank is an automatic hire.
For Example:
David was interviewed by 4 employers, and has ranked them according to fit and preference. Remember, by ranking a company, you commit to accepting an offer, no exception. Therefore, if you would not accept an offer from an employer, you must consult a co-op coordinator to discuss how to complete your ranking form.

The Match
1. The matching process works on the principle of ‘lowest sum wins’.
2. The student and employer rankings are entered into an Excel sheet. Students are listed in column ‘A’ and employers are listed in row ‘1’. Both rankings are entered into the corresponding cell to produce a total score for each combination.
3. The matches are then determined starting with the lowest score combination, which would be a 1-1 ranking by both the employer and the student, for a total of ‘2’. This is considered an automatic match.
4. The process then continues by matching employers with students in a sequential manner by examining total scores of 3, 4, etc. until all possible combinations are exhausted.
5. If the situation arises where there are two cells totalling ‘3’ (i.e. 1/2 and 2/1) the match goes in favour of the employer.
