Priscilla Clark History: Addendum1
The Antecedents of Priscilla Clark of Somersetshire
Priscilla Clark was born in 1826 in Somerset to James and Fanny (née Hurle) Clark; the Clarks were longtime residents of Buckland-Denham parish in Somerset on the eastern edge of today’s Somersetshire not far from Frome. ‘Buckland-Denham’ is the old name of the village; the spelling has changed in the last century to ‘Buckland-Dinham’. The Clarks of Buckland-Denham parish can be traced back to about 1650, although the oldest records are very difficult to read. All the Clarks discovered so far in the lineage apparently married local girls from Somerset.
Priscilla’s father James married Fanny Hurle of Rode parish in Somerset (later Wiltshire). The Hurles came to Rode from Nether Stowey. Fanny’s maternal line (Cox) originated in Evercreech parish in central Somerset. Identification of James and Fanny is clear from the Buckland-Denham parish registers as are their children from the christening and burial data. Caution is however required as James’ cousin Elias Clark and his wife Elizabeth (King) Clark were having children in the same parish at the same time; most critical is identification of the children who died young as their parents names are not given, but fortunately their ages at death are specified which allowed them to be unambiguously identified.
Generation A
1. James A Clark, christened 6 January 1793 at Buckland-Denham, Somersetshire,England; buried 29 January 1865 (age 72) in the same parish.1 He married on 29 January 1826 at Buckland-Denham, Fanny Hurle,2 born 8 March 1801 in Rode, Somersetshire, to Richard and Mary (née Cox) Hurle.3 Fanny was deaf in 1851.4
Daughter Priscilla was the oldest of eight children born to them in the Buckland-Denham, Somerset parish (for details see body of manuscript).
Generation A
2. Priscilla1(JamesA) Clark, christened 22 September 1826 at Buckland-Denham Parish, Somerset;5 murdered 5 July 1869 near Carson City, Nevada.6 Priscilla married (1), on 4 September 1853 in Newbury, Berkshire, England, George Pickett, a widower with three small children.7 A son of James and Mary (née Armstrong) Pickett, he was christened 2 September 1821 at Chieveley, Berkshire.8 He died of smallpox on 2 April 1857 in St. Louis, Missouri.9 George Pickett had married (1), on 11 February 1843 in Chieveley, Maria Jarvis.10 Priscilla married (2) William Armstrong Pickett, George's elder brother, in Brigham Young's office at Salt Lake City on 3 March 1860 as his third wife.11 William was christened 9 November 1818 at Chieveley, Berkshire, and died 11 December 1901 in Tooele, Utah.12 At the time of hismarriage to Priscilla he had two other Mormon wives: (1) Mary Castle,13whom he married on 6 November 1841 and (2) Mary Brownjohn,14whom he married on 11 June 1856. William took a fourth wife, Ann Todd,15 on 10 November 1873. He had no children from any of these marriages.16 Priscilla married (3) William Wilford at Hangtown (now Placerville), California, on 30 June 1862.17 Son of Edward and Ann (née Gutteridge) Wilford, he was christened 10 January 1825 at South Croxton, Leicestershire, England.18 William died of smallpox on 21 January 1869 at Carson City, Nevada.19 Priscilla had a son George W. Pickett20 in 1862 in Hangtown (Placerville), El Dorado, California (out of wedlock) probably fathered by (4) William Gill Mills. This was the probable cause of William’s excommunication from the Mormon Church in 1863 and Priscilla’s pregnancy a likely cause for her fleeing Utah to Hangtown in 1862 (see body of manuscript).
