Belgium Meeting – European Parliament

Centennial of the Israeli Medical Association

The Belgian Division of the Israeli Medical Association has arranged a two day meeting to mark the Centennial.

This event will take place in Brussels on Sunday 6th / Monday 7th November 2011.

The meeting is based at the Hotel Conrad

The Sunday programme starts at 08:30 and will be introduced and chaired by Dr Willy Lipschutz, who heads the Belgian Jewish physicians’ organisation.

The morning session includes talks about the history of Jewish medicine in Europe: Dr Karl Holhuber (Austria) will speak about dermatologists in Vienna and Dr Bruno Halioua (France) will cover the topic of Jewish physicians in Europe during World War II. There will also be presentations about the use of Israeli technology in gastro-enterology (“Pill-Cam”) and cardiology.

On Sunday afternoon there will be a tour of the Magritte Museum, which will be followed by talks about rehabilitation in Belgium and Israel, about new developments in the treatment of genetic diseases (Dr Annick Raas-Rothschild) and about Israel – Italy links in medicine by Drs Mortara and Silvera. Dr Azaria Rein will describe the humanitarian ventures of the Hadassah Medical Organisation. The conference dinner will take place at 19:00.

On Monday there will be a tour of the Brussels Jewish Museum at 14:00. The main event will be held at the European Parliament starting at 16:30.

This event will start with a tour of the Parliament, followed at 18:00 by a symposium for European Parliamentarians, which will be introduced and chaired by Dr Zeev Feldman, who is the member of the Israeli Medical Association Executive responsible for international affairs. Dr Arnon Afek will talk about the Israeli Health Care system and how it addresses disparities and inequalities in health; Dr Nurit Nirel will describe Israel’s remarkable experience in the integration of immigrant doctors; Dr Amir Bar will describe Israeli humanitarian aid in Haiti and Thailand; and Drs Maayan, Mosoes and Rein will talk about training programmes for foreign doctors in Israel.

Finally Drs David Katz (UK) and Henri Goldstein (Denmark) will talk about the role of the Jewish physician in Europe and their linkages to Israel medicine. The symposium will conclude with a reception to open a poster exhibition illustrating the role of Jews in Medicine (prepared by Dr Simon Cohen) and the achievements of Israeli medicine over the past 100 years.

Medical Halacha

A three day conference on medical halacha, organised by Dr David Landau and Dr Jacob Opat, will take place between 10th and 13th November 2011 at Hendon United Synagogue (Raleigh Close, London NW4).

The guest speaker is Rabbi Prof Avraham Steinberg, who will be taking part in all the main sessions.

The conference will be opened at 19:30 on 10th (Thursday) with a welcome from Dayan Ehrentreu, the former head of the London Beth Din. This will be followed by an opening symposium on the subject of Organ Donation, where Prof Anthony Warrens will provide a clinical overview.

On 11th (Friday) morning there will be study sessions on “Putting Oneself in Danger” and “Risk Taking”

The second main symposium at 19:45 on 12th (Saturday) will be on “End of Life Issues” where Professor Daniel Hochhauser will provide a clinical overview.

On 13th (Sunday) morning there will be study sessions on “Maternity Issues” and “Designer Babies”.

The final symposium at 14:00 on 13th (Sunday) will include talks by Prof David Katz, Rabbi Prof Avraham Steinberg and Rabbi Dr Akiva Tatz, and a question and answer session at which they will be joined by Dayan Ehrentreu.

Rabbi Professor Avraham Steinberg

"Recent Developments in Jewish Medical Ethics - an Israeli perspective"

Prof Steinberg is one of Israel’s leading authorities on Jewish medical ethics. He was awarded the Israel Prize in recognition of his contribution to this field in 1999. He is a paediatric neurologist, based at Shaarei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.

Previously he has served as director of the Schlesinger Institute for Medical – Halakhic Research and the Hebrew University Centre for Medical Ethics. He advises both the Chief Rabbinate and the Ministry of Health.

His many publications include the seven volume Encyclopedia of Jewish Medical Law in Hebrew and three volumes in English translation, and numerous book chapters and articles.

He has addressed many of the fundamental medical ethical questions of our time, and is perhaps best known to the wider public in recent years for his contributions in the field of organ donation, and for the Israeli "end – of – life" law, widely known as the "Steinberg Law". He also finds time to edit the Talmudic Encyclopedia.
