The American Road Trip!

Your team’s goal is to create an 8 day road trip around the United States traveling through as many states as you can (at least 7 states). Your trip will start at Lovinggood. When stopping for the night, you must stay in the largest populated city in the state or the state’s capital.

During your trip, you will do the following:

*You must visit 6sites in with 3 of those sites being historical(monuments, historical museums and geographic features) sites. The other 3 sites can include places of general interest including pop culture sites. You will create a travel guide for the sites.

  • GUIDING QUESTIONSfor completing travel guide:
    -What makes this site a worthwhile destination for visitors?
    -What might be the historical or cultural importance of this location?
    -When did an important or notable event take place in this location?
    -What noteworthy story might be told about the people that live here and/or the events that took place here?
    -What are the precise locations of sites travelers should visit?

*7 “State Information Sheets”(see attached) -- You must travel through at least 7 states, therefore completing 7 State information sheets. If you travel through more than 7 that is but you only have to complete 7 sheets. These will each be a separate grades.

*You will create adisplay that includes:

  • a map of your travels,
  • cost of trip, each group will be given a set amount that they will have to spend, you must stay within the set amount
  • all the information you have gathered, including pictures of the places you visit, along with your itinerary and travel guides. The display should be creative, colorful, informational, and neat.

*Your team will record the mileage on a chart or table that you have designed to best help you keep a record of miles traveled. You may use the internet to help you determine the mileage.

You may choose any route you want. Your trip can either be a round trip by car or you can rent a car and fly home. The cost of the rental and airfare must be included in your cost for the trip.

Calculating Cost of Trip:Refer to your chosen criteria for you trip for the type of car that you will be traveling in and the gas mileage per gallon.

  1. How much money was spent on food, if breakfast cost $6.50 for one person, lunch cost $8.25 for one person and supper was $10.35 for one person? If breakfast was free at the hotel you most indicate this in some manner. If your vehicle is an RV and you choose to cook your meals the cost of groceries for two people would be $250 for the entire trip.
  2. Determine how much money was spent for the hotel each night spent on the road.(You must stay in a hotel or at a camp site. Meaning you can’t sleep in your car.)Create a chart illustrating what hotel you will stay in each night and the cost of the hotel. If you have an RV you can choose to either stay in the RV at an RV camp or stay in a hotel.
  3. Determine the total cost of the trip for attractions, gas, food and hotel stays.

When stopping to see sites consider the following themes and stay within two or three of the themes for the entire trip.

-Birthplaces or homes of notable Americans (such as women, African-Americans, inventors)(historical)
-Stops along the Pony Express(historical)
-Battlefields of the Revolutionary War, Spanish-American War or Civil War (historical)
-Milestones in the Civil Rights Movement(historical)
-Notable locations in literature, music or movies
-American centers of industry (such as auto factories, coal mines, oil fields, technology labs or financial centers)
-Notable laboratories of invention (cotton gin, airplane, electricity, telephone, locomotive, etc.)(historical)
-American Indian reservations
-National parks or monuments(historical)
-Zoos, aquariums or amusement parks
-Major league baseball ballparks, football stadiums or NASCAR racetracks
-Pop culture landmarks
-Notable, regional cuisine
-Birthplaces or homes of notable Americans (such as actors, actresses, musicians, writers, athletes)
