Summary of Position
The Amber Foundation provides a fully residential structured programme for 17 to 30 year olds. Amber becomes a young person's temporary home where they can work towards achieving independence and a better future. Almost all who come to us are unemployed and homeless,many have a history ofaddiction or have been involved in crime or have been in prison. We provide 24 hour care and support every day of the year and whilst the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, our programme is carefully structured and tailored to the individual. It provides young people with a challenging and engaging step-by-step rebuilding process designed to help them overcome each of the obstacles that have previously stood between them and independent living. Working in teams they experience positive peer support and feel valued and motivated.
We are looking for a skilled Grounds andMaintenance Managerto ensure the buildings and surrounding grounds are kept in good repair, with emphasis on first class workmanship and an eye for detail.You will be responsible foroperating and maintaining a viable and effective preventative maintenance programme for the whole site, including the buildings, vehicles and surrounding grounds. You will ensure that all maintenance problems and queries are dealt with efficiently and effectively as well as ensuring all maintenance activities are carried out safely and securely, and in line with company policies and procedures, and current health and safety legislation.
DBS check and 2 references are required for this role.
Primary Responsibilities, Tasks and Duties
  • To perform daily/weekly maintenance checks of the buildings, grounds and vehicles.
  • Check the maintenance record book daily and priorities tasks to ensure that the highest standards are maintained at all times.
  • To complete general maintenance tasks and repair works to the buildings, grounds and vehicles as required.
  • Be self-motivated and work without supervision.
  • Call in contractors when required, with the Centre Managers authorisation keeping in line with the departments budgeted costs and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Supervise all external workmen to ensure first class workmanship with an aim to professional results.
  • Maintain the fire precaution equipment and carry out regular testing of said equipment.
  • To be aware of and adhere to all legislation that is relevant to your work and ensure that all legal requirements are met, including: licensing, Health and Safety at Work, COSHH, Environmental Health, Fire Precautions, Manual Handling and any others.
  • Ensure that all requests made upon the grounds and maintenance department are carried out quickly, tidily and efficiently as possible with close links to the Centre Manager and all other staff.
  • Control and order all stock items that are required for the running of the centre. E.g. paint, light bulbs, within the set budgets and the Centre Manager’s authorisation.
  • Manages energy costs efficiently by ensuring that lights, electricity, gas and water are not used unnecessarily in the whole centre.
  • To provide basic training to staff and residents in the safe use of household tools.
  • To occasionally supervise residents who may wish to assist you in the completion of general maintenance tasks.
  • To take an active role in supporting the centre manager in maintaining and updating the health and safety system.

Personal Specification

Criteria / Essential / Desirable
Experience / People with strong experience in a trade or relevant building services back ground and can demonstrate the ability to manage their time effectively.
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of fire alarm and smoke extraction systems. / Experience of managing a substantial site.
Experience of emergency lighting testing, PAT and other compliance areas.
Skills/Knowledge / Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in computer skills, Microsoft office, word and excel
Possesses an understanding of safety and fire safety systems.
The ability to negotiate with external contractors. / A recognised trade qualification.
Be willing to work occasional anti-social hours in the event of an emergency.
Full driving licence.
Personal Qualities / Ability to handle multiple priorities.
Demonstrate good judgement, problem solving and decision making skills.
A positive outlook towards work and a non-judgemental approach to working alongside young people.
The ability to empathise with and support those from a disadvantaged background.
