Background Information
The Almeida Theatre was founded in 1980 and is a leading producing London theatre company with national and international reputation for producing work of the highest standard, achieving recognition through consistent critical acclaim, increasing national reach, international profile, full houses and breadth of audiences.
A small room with an international reputation, the Almeida began life as a literary and scientific society, complete with library, lecture theatre and laboratory. From the very beginning, the building existed to investigate the world.
Since 2013 the company has been led by Artistic Director Rupert Goold and Executive Director Denise Wood and through their leadership the company has gone from strength to strength. Under Rupert Goold’s Artistic Directorship, the heart of the Almeida’s vision is to make bold work which challenges andquestions theatre and the world we live in, bringing together the most exciting artists to interrogate, provoke, inspire and entertain audiences through new writing and reinvigorated classics. The Almeida’s mission is to re-inspire and re-invent live theatre performance in the twenty first century.
Successes include an unprecedented win of eight Olivier awards in 2013/14, West End transfers of Chimerica, Ghosts, 1984, King Charles III, Oresteia, Hamlet, Ink and Mary Stuart, the unique Almeida Greeks sell-out season which included the groundbreaking fourteen hour live-streamings of complete readings of Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey attracting audiences from around the world, the Broadway transfers of 1984, American Psycho and King Charles III, the latter of which was broadcast as a television film on BBC2 in 2017.
Role specification
Following a Board review, the Almeida Theatre is seeking to broaden the diversity of its board and appoint up to two new members to join the Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees offers guidance and expertise to the Executive (the Artistic Director, Executive Directorand senior management). Board meetings are normally held four times a year.
Trustees must be positive and passionate advocates for the theatre and its core mission, and must ensure that its affairs as a Registered Charity are conducted with probity.
They may be required to take additional roles as appropriate on sub committees. Trustees are expected to attend regularly theatre performances, fundraising events and informal meetings with the Artistic Director and Executive Director and from time to time with other members of the senior management team.
Appointments are for an initial four-year term. Trustees may serve a maximum of two terms of four years.
The Board has committed to a common purpose to enhance what the organisation can and wants to achieve, and to play a significant role in supporting and driving the fundraising.
We aspire to develop a diverse Board of Trustees that:
- includes representation of artists
- is active and supportive in fundraising to enable proper resources to be given to the work
- challenges the management in order to create and ensure the best use of resources
- is enthused and therefore engages with the outside world to create and match opportunities with reality
- supports the company to broker and manage relationships with key stakeholders
- advocates for the Almeida at the highest level
- demonstrates experience covering the significant areas of the company’s operation, and who represent the diversity that exists in our society
Person specification

The Almeida is looking for highly skilled candidates who are able to make a significant impact on the Almeida’s fundraising efforts.Additionally, the successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the person specifications as outlined below.

Trustee with extensive experience of marketing/communications and digital
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following abilities and attributes:
- Extensive experience of one or more of marketing, communications/publicity and digital communications
- Connections within the cultural world
- The ability to work constructively with others in a governance or committee role
- Excellent communications and ambassadorial skills
- A commitment to equal opportunities and diversity
Trustee currently operating at a high level in the legal world
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following abilities and attributes:
- An extensive track record of offering legal advice at a senior level
- An ability to offer advice and expertise to the board and management where appropriate in a manner that will protect and enhance the organisation
- Applicants should be a UK qualified solicitor or barrister
- The ability to work constructively with others in a governance or committee role
- Excellent communications and ambassadorial skills
- A commitment to equal opportunities and diversity
Time commitment
Four board meetings per year plus attendance of relevant sub-committees, performances and fundraising events
