The Alexandria Lakes AreaChamberis seeking a new Executive Director!

The position requires a servant leader to managean incredible staff of three in one of the fastest growing micropolitan cities in Minnesota. The ideal candidate will be people driven and have a passion for business. The candidate who fills this role will be responsible for serving the membership of the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce though proactive, positive community leadership. Specific areas of responsibility includes direct supervision of all staff, organizational structure and procedure, motivation of volunteers, profit and loss oversight, community outreach, membership sales & retention, strategic planning and executive support to the Chamber Board of Directors.

Essential position functions include:

  1. Provides Leadership and Supervision to Chamber Staff
  2. Effective recruitment, orientation, scheduling, training, recognition, and retention of staff.
  3. Create and maintain a work environment for staff that is conducive to high productivity and morale.
  4. Provides coaching and discipline as needed and performs a formal written performance appraisal at least annually.
  5. Provides regular formal and informal communication with staff to ensure they have enough information to effectively do their job and advocate for the Chamber.
  6. Recommends wage adjustments for staff to the Personnel Committee.
  1. Provides Oversight of Member Services
  2. Recruits and sellsthe benefits of chamber membership to prospective members and the general public.
  3. Monitors member retention, ensuring achievement of goals as established by the Board of Directors.
  4. Participates in various committees. Recruits committee members. Balances committee structure to match committee purpose.
  5. Assists support staff in retaining members and growing the membership base.
  6. Assists support staff in creating and delivering networking and training opportunities for members.
  7. Supports and attends various business meetings and chamber events including, member lunches, Wake Up Alexandria, ribbon cuttings, open houses, annual meeting, etc.
  8. Ensures there are effective software systems for membership management.
  9. Community Leadership/Promotion
  10. Visible and approachable by community at large.
  11. Establishes atmosphere of collaboration for public and private sectors.
  12. Organizes and facilitates all monthly Leadership Alexandria program sessions.
  13. Actively participates in community activities to project and sustain a favorable image for the Chamber.
  14. Oversees marketing and public relations to promote Alexandria in the areas of tourism, retail sales, manufacturing and healthcare.
  15. Establishes and maintains quality promotions and marketing to promote Alexandria throughout the region, state and nation.
  16. Develops and maintains standards for public information services, focusing on tourists, visitors and relocation customers.
  17. Administrative
  18. Monitors and maintains Chamber budget. Meets monthly with Finance Committee and Executive Board to assess budget performance and maintain fiscal policies as developed.
  19. Manages the long-term facility and equipment needs of the Chamber.
  20. Oversees general operation of the Chamber. Maintains policies and procedures within appropriate laws.
  21. Support to the Board of Directors
  22. Provides budget updates monthly to Board of Directors to monitor progress.
  23. Coordinates elections of board members and makes recommendations to fill vacant board positions.
  24. Provides support and meets annually with the Board appointed Nominating Committee to fill upcoming board vacancies as specified by Chamber ByLaws.
  25. Orientates new board members.
  26. Keeps the Board of Directors informed about the Chamber’s operational activities, community connecting, legislative activities, and progress made on strategic plan.
  27. Ensures proper procedures are utilized, as established in the by-laws.
  28. Provides input and works with Finance Committee to prepare a draft of the annual operation budget.
  29. Performs other related duties or special projects as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of general accounting practices and administration functions.
  2. Computer literate and able to use software such as Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc).
  3. Comfortable with modern technology including computer use, smart devises, and social media.
  4. Independently identify and resolve problems and/or make recommendations to the Board of Directors about resolution options. Make sound decisions that reflect the best interest of the organization and its members.
  5. Strong organizational skills, including the ability to plan, organize and set long-term strategy with an appropriate work plan to accomplish it.
  6. Able to work collaboratively and positively with other of diverse backgrounds, opinions, and needs.
  7. Excellent professional communication skills, including written and oral communication skills, strong listening skills, and the ability to make presentations to groups.
  8. Working level knowledge of basic human resource policies, procedures, laws and regulations,
  9. Ability to adapt organizational policy/practice to unusual situations and make related decisions.
  10. Ability to work weekends and/or evening hours as required by the job.
  11. Present a positive image to members and the greater community through appropriate appearance and grooming, demeanor, and comments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in business administration or marketing, (2) years non-profit or chamber experience and (4) years of leadership experience or any equivalent combination of training, education and experience preferred.
  2. Demonstrated community leadership.
  3. United StatesChamber IOM or American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE)certification preferred.
