NEWA Wrestler of the Week:US Coast Guard Academy,157 pounderChris Sullivan, SO, (Canton, MA). Sullivan went 2-0 over the weekend to help the Bears split their home opening Tri-meet. Sullivan beat Carter Merecki of RWU 1-0 and beat CJ Luth of USM 11-0 to earn the Major Decision win. Luth is a returning Region place winner and beat nationally ranked Ty Herzog in his first match of the night. Sullivan had a big win over Luth and placed 5th at the prestigious York invitational last weekend. Sullivan is now ranked #8 nationally.
NEWA Rookie Wrestler of the Week:WPI, 157 pounderGraysen DeLuca, FR, (Canterbury, CT). DeLuca went 3-0 and had a big weekend for the Engineers. DeLuca beat Kim of RIT 5-2 and won by major decision over Tom Marrone of Oneonta14-2. DeLuca also had a huge 5-4 win over Adrian Berry of Cortland 5-4. Berry was a region finalist and national qualifier last year. Deluca missed the start of the season due to injury and definitely looked strong in his first event of the year.

In the RWU/USCGA dual, Nick Barbaria of RWU beat Earl Roberts 7-4 at 125. Senior Dan Roger of RWU won 8-4 over Dominick Summers of CG. At 149 James Knoeller of RWU beat Matt Viera in a high scoring affair 15-11. Then in a rematch of last year region finals Dan Ressler of RWU beat Mike Shermot 13-5. We have only seen Shermot a few times this season and last year he had an outstanding second. In the RWU/USM match Justin Cochran got his second pin of the day with a fall over Brendan Wei of USM. At 157, CJ Luth of USM had a big win in an exciting match with Ty Herzog. Luth and Herzog were tied at 13 all and headed into overtime. Luth was able to secure the takedown and win the match 15-13 in SV-1. The USCGA beat Southern Maine. The Bears won 7 of the 10 bouts and it was highlighted by wrestler of the week Chris Sullivan beating CJ Luth 11-0. Coast Guard got solid wins from Roberts at 125 and Painten at 285 and got pins from Palomba at 165 and Shermot at 174. PSU beat USM in a dual winning 6 of the 10 bouts. PSU got pins from Montgomery at 174 and Callahan at 165 to help seal the dual. RIC also beat USM. Daniel Del Gallo went 2-0 on the day for the Huskies. He beat region place winner Jon Costa 8-5. Teammate CJ Luth beat region place winner Michael Murphy 6-0. Jake Dorman at 141 for RIC beat Brendan Wei of USM 13-8, Drago at 174, Conrad at 184, and Georges at 285 all secured pins for the Anchormen. RIC went 2-0 on the day with the win over PSU. RIC won 6 of the 7 matches decided by decisions. Shawn Giblin had a big pin at 141 and John Georges won by Tech fall at 285 to help lead RIC in the dual win. Williams won all ten bouts in their dual vs Trinity. Williams won by pin in seven of their matches. Trinity had a full lineup and is definitely moving in the right direction, just unfortunately matched up with a very strong Williams team. WPI went 2-1 over the weekend. They were led by Deluca (Rookie wrestler of the week) and fellow freshmen Mike Curtis who also went 3-0. Curtis beat Pietri of Oneonta 9-2 and he beat Lewis of Cortland 7-1. Brian Amato at 125, Pete Nash at 141, and Jack Nigro at 149 all went 2-1 for the Engineers. JWU also went 2-1. The Wildcats had two dominate wins but lost a tight 20-15 match to Cortland. Joe Ferinde at 133, Stephan Jarrell at 184, Khamri Thomas at 197 all went 3-0 for JWU. They also went 3-0 at 125 as Jay Albis went 2-0 and Bobby Jordan went 1-0.
