WHAT:

The Rite Journey program has been a challenging experience for the Yr 9 students; The Abyss is the culmination of the program and is designed to put students out of their comfort zone to help them learn more about themselves. It is a solo camping experience in which they are required to be self-sufficient as well as applying the concepts of stillness, silence, solitude and reflection. The students will be allocated a camp site and be required to not interact with anyone for the duration of the camp. Staff will patrol the area regularly, and it is imperative THAT NO ELECTRONICAL DEVICES ARE USED AT ANY TIME.

·  FOOD INFORMATION/DIETRY REQUIRMENTS:

Students are required to bring their own dinner to eat during their Solo experience.

-  Due to safety requirements, students will not be permitted to use any form of stove when out on their Solo. Therefore, their dinner will need to consist of pre-made food ready to be consumed or ingredients that are able to be prepared without cooking (eg. Pasta, Sandwich, Salad). Students may bring their own Thermos to prepare a hot drink/soup etc. Fires are not allowed.

-  As with other camp, this is a NUT free zone.

Students will need to provide lunch for day 1, as well as their own snacks. Parents should ensure students are sensible with their snack choices. Bags of chips and packets of lollies DO NOT count as dinner.

-  No soft drink or energy drinks are permitted at ANY TIME!!

-  Students will need to provide enough water to last them throughout the night. Water will be available at base camp for before and after the solo.

Dominic College will provide students with a hearty breakfast to celebrate their return, as well as lunch back at school.

·  GEAR

Dominic College will be providing some sleeping gear for students to use when out on their Solo.

Students have the choice of:

Bringing their own tent/tarp to sleep in/under

Bringing their own Swag to sleep in

Sleeping in a Dominic tent

Sleeping under a Dominic tarp

Students will need to return the attached slip with their decision, so we can ensure every student has sufficient gear for the night. There are not enough tents for every student. Students will have to set up their own campsite, so should ensure they know how to set up their tent/tarp prior to Solo night. If choosing to bring your own tent, we ask that the tent is no larger than a 3-4man size, as we have limited, suitable tent space at the property, and students will need to carry all gear to their campsite.

Students must inform Mr Mackie on the attached sheet if you need to borrow a hiking pack. Gear can be brought to school in a duffel bag/wheeled suitcases, however this may need to be packed into a hiking pack before you head to your campsite.

Other gear students need to provide.

/ Sleeping Mat (Dominic has some available to borrow if needed)
/ Sleeping Bag (Dominic has some available to borrow if needed)
/ Eating utensils (for Lunch/Breakfast, as well as anything you need for BYO Dinner)
-  Bowl, Plate, Cup, Cutlery
/ Warm Clothing
-  Warm Jumper, Pants
-  Thermals
-  Beanie; Gloves
/ Rain Jacket (Dominic has some available to borrow if needed)
/ Sturdy, closed-toe shoes (eg. Runners)
/ Backpack large enough to carry everything in (Dominic has some available to borrow if needed)
/ Lunch day 1, Dinner, snacks (no nuts)
/ Notepad; Pen
/ Small first aid kit (Eg. Band-Aids for small scratches)
-  Students will be briefed on what to do in case of an emergency/first aid during the Solo
/ Torch
/ Water bottle (enough water to last you throughout the night)
/ WHISTLE – It is important to the risk management of the camp that each student has a whistle.

·  WHAT NOT TO BRING:

-  STUDENTS ARE NOT TO BRING ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES

All electronic devices, such as iPods/MP3 players, gaming devices, and all mobile phones are NOT to be brought to camp. Any devices found on camp will be confiscated by staff and returned to students when back at school along with the corresponding consequence (eg. afterschool detention).

The Solo experience is based on students cutting ties to the outside world, and having the opportunity to be alone and reflect. Students will be briefed on the emergency procedures if they need assistance overnight, and staff will be contactable 24hrs.

-  Students must not bring any form of stoves, matches/lighter.
