On January 27, 2006all seventh graders participated in an awards ceremony in the auditorium to recognize students. Each homeroom recognized one student as a citizen of the month. Various academic and behavioral awards are presented monthly to students.

On Thursday, February 16, 2006 the 7 Orange and the 7 Red Teams honored their students with a seventh grade reward day. Students having no checks according to the School Wide Effective Behavior System were invited to a movie presentation as well as a pizza luncheon, served by their core teachers. All students eligible to participate in this reward day qualified to be in a raffle for a special prize.

7 Orange Notes of Interest

English-All 7 Orange students participated in several lively and insightful discussions related to famous Americans and great leaders. The students learned about many leaders, including Dr. M. L. King, Jr. and other, famous Black Americans. As the students were using their English writing and discussion skills, they were also learning about the value of leadership in our global society. Also, in conjunction with Black history month, the students will be taking advantage of a related brochure provided to schools by Giant Foods. The students are beginning a novel unit by completing an interdisciplinary, research unit as a pre-reading activity.

Social Studies - In an upcoming unit, 7 Orange students will be studying the history and development of Islam andancient Arabia. The focus will then shift to the modern Middle East. Special emphasis will be placed on development of an understanding of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the rationale behind the terrorism in our modern world. Following the Middle East unit, 7Orange will move on to the development ofGreek civilization. Topics of interest include thefollowing: the development of Greek democracy, the contrast between the great city-states Sparta and Athens, the Olympic Games,the theatre,Greek philosophers (Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle), andthe conquests of Alexander the Great.

Science-In the second marking period the students learned about the parts of each cell, along with the job of each part. The students constructed cell models to demonstrate their understanding of this material. The students also completed the “Pasteur Experiment” to determine if cells could grow from nothing. In the third marking period the students will be learning about DNA, cell division, mitosis, meiosis, and the classification of living things. They will be doing several experiments on these topics, such as the following: The extraction of DNA from an onion, comparing and contrasting mitosis and meiosis, and the classification of a living organism.

Reading - The students were introduced to stories by Edgar Allen Poe. We also read background information about him and learned of the many contributions that he made to literature. After that, we learned about Arthur Conan Doyle and read a few stories with his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes. In addition, we continue to work with the content classes of science and social studies to reinforce the previewing technique of SQ3R. As the marking period ends we will be working on activities that deal with learning about Martin Luther King.
