The 5C’s of Ministry
The Kingdom of God is a Kingdom of purpose. With any purposeful endeavour there will be work and skills required. For a work to be successful certain considerations and abilities are necessary. Fortunately God has not left us to struggle with the work on our own but provides power, graces and resources to fulfil our great commission.
NKJV John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
NKJV2 Peter 1:2-3Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
1.Five C’s Ministry Traits
1.Counting the cost (Am I willing to serve God)
Luk 14:27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
Luk 14:28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?
Luk 14:29 For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
Luk 14:30 saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'
- The greatest challenge of serving is that God requires you to count the cost
- It will cost you your time, your effort, your energy, it could cost you financially
Jos 24:14 "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
Jos 24:15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
2.Competency (can you do the job)
Do you have the competency or skill to do what is required?
Competency: The ability to do something successfully or efficiently.
(Darby) 2 Tim 2:2 And the things thou hast heard of me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, such as shall be competent to instruct others also.
2Ti 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
<END GREEK> orthotomeo (or-thot-om-eh'-o); from a compound of NT:3717 and the base of NT:5114, to make a straight cut, i.e. (figuratively) to dissect (expound) correctly (the divine message):
KJV - rightly divide(the surgeon)
- There is nothing worse than people serving outside their gifting or out of the giftedness.
1Ch 22:14 "I have taken great pains to provide for the temple of the LORD a hundred thousand talents of gold, a million talents of silver, quantities of bronze and iron too great to be weighed, and wood and stone. And you may add to them.
1Ch 22:15 You have many workmen: stonecutters, masons and carpenters, as well as men skilled in every kind of work
1Ch 22:16 in gold and silver, bronze and iron craftsmen beyond number. Now begin the work, and the LORD be with you."
1Ch 25:6 All these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music of the temple of the LORD, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king.
1Ch 25:7 Along with their relatives—all of them trained and skilled in music for the LORD—they numbered 288.
God requires skilled people, people that have the capacity or are willing to be equipped to do what is require
Msg Eph 4:11 He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher
Eph 4:12 to train Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ's body, the church,
Eph 4:13 until we're all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God's Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ.
3.Character (can I trust you)
Your character is a mirror of your core beliefs
Luk 16:10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.
Character is something that is proven over a period of time
Mat 25:21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
- Faithfulness obviously means to be trustworthy, loyal, committed
- But it also means to be accurate in detail
Pro 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
1Ti 3:8 Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.
1Ti 3:9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.
1Ti 3:10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
1Ti 3:11 In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.
1Ti 3:12 A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.
1Ti 3:13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
- Likewise the qualifications for a Bishop/Pastor are also character traits.
NKJV1 Tim 3:1-7 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;
3 not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence
5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?);
6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
NKJV Prov 10:26As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy man to those who send him.
NKJV Acts 6:3-5
3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business;
4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit,
4.Culture (do you fit in the team)
- Every church and every team has a culture
- Culture simply means (this is how we do things here)
Rev 3:15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
Rev 3:16 So, because you are lukewarm neither hot nor cold I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
1Pe 4:11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
5.Capacity (can you grow with us)
Here is the challenge because every one of us have a certain capacity and it is vital that you know what that is and that we know what that is
Exo 18:21 But select capable men from all the people men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
Joh 15:1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
Joh 15:2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
Joh 15:8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
Luk 5:37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
Luk 5:38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
