The 2014 Emerson College Rose Swing

With Lafayette College

You are cordially invited to The Emerson College Rose Swing with Lafayette. The tournament is being held on the Emerson College campus located in downtown Boston and should give you an opportunity to see some of the beautiful sites in the city.

We will be hosting two separate tournaments on Saturday and Sunday February 22nd, and 23rd, 2014. We are providing competition in Prose, Poetry, Dramatic Interpretation, Dramatic Duo, Impromptu, Extemp, Persuasive, Informative, Rhetorical Criticism, POI and After Dinner Speaking and Lincoln Douglas debate following NFA rules. All rules can be found on the NFA website.

The tournament will be run by Heather May and John Boyer with the assistance of their coaching staff.

We look forward to seeing you and your students in Boston in February.

Sincerely,

Heather May

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

I.E. EVENTS: Group A: Ext, Impromptu, ADS, POI, Persuasive, DI Group B: DUO, RC, Poetry, Prose, Informative

DEBATE: NFA Lincoln-Douglas, Open, Switch Side

REGISTRATION: Friday Feb. 14th, 5 pm

FEES: $30 per school

$20 per LD contestant

$10 per Individual Events slot

JUDGING: One Individual Events judge covers 6 slots.

One LD judge covers 2 debaters. Hired judges should be confirmed in advance. Hired fees are $10 per IE slot and $50 per debater. If you have judges who would like to travel with you to the Boston area, please let us know so we can hire them to judge!! Because IE and LD are running at the same time, judges may not count for both LD and IE entries. As with most tournament we need your JUDGES more than your money – if it becomes apparent that judging will be an issue, we may have to limit the number of judges a team can hire – we hope to avoid this but please try to limit the number of judges you need to hire to 1 or 2.

LATE FEES: Any changes to your entry after Friday Feb. 14th at 5pm will incur a penalty fee. In addition to the entry fee due, there will be a $10 charge per debater and a $5 per IE slot assessed. DROPS AT REGISTRATION: IE - $15 per slot; LD $25 per debater; IE judge - $10 per round scheduled; LD judge - $50 (plus you must pay for the new judging fees).

AWARDS: Awards will be presented to the top speakers in Individual Events and Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

RULES, GUIDELINES, STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW!

1. All students competing must be registered, undergraduate students at a college or university.

2. Students can enter up to 3 events in each flight. HOWEVER, we WILL NOT delay rounds to accommodate speakers. There is ample time to enter two events and easily move between buildings. If you choose to enter more than 2 events in a bracket and are not able to get to your rounds, you will forfeit that round! LD’ers may enter one Group A event (but not extemp), and one event in Group B. As you look at the schedule, you’ll note that we stagger Group A/B and LD, so, you will need to do your IE FIRST; LD SECOND.

3. Schools may register an unlimited number of contestants in any and all events. But please realize that team members may compete against each other if there are more contestants than sections or if we have to “clear” sections for judges.

4. Visuals are permitted in all Public Address Events. We cannot guarantee all competition rooms will have tables and/or desks. Please bring your own extension cords if you need electrical power!

5. Students are encouraged to memorize their speeches; however, notes are not forbidden. The tournament staff is not responsible for individual judges preferences on the use of notes.

6. Hotel Information – Hotels in town are expensive. However, if you do stay close to Emerson, there’s almost no reason for any rental vans/cars, as Emerson is in the Heart of Boston with shopping, restaurants and entertainment all within walking distance. For hotels outside the city I highly recommend contacting Jason Wood and he can arrange much more ‘suburb’ friendly rates. He can be reached at . Hotels to try close to Emerson are:
