The 2006 Awards Banquet has been confirmed. The banquet will be held at the Mi. Co. Fairgrounds in Paola, Kansas at 6:00 p.m. on December 16, 2006 in the 4-H Building. The meat of the main dish will be provided by Quarter Ridge Trailers and cooked by Karen Holland and friends! Drinks will be provided by the association. Everyone please bring your own table service plus enough for any guest you bring. Each family bring a side dish or dessert that begins with the first letter of your last name that goes with lasagna or spaghetti. We are asking for each family to bring a centerpiece (hand made or bought) for a raffle drawing. All money collected will go into the association account for 2007 year end awards.

Please remember to bring a new toy to support the Toys for Tots program.

Members, remember to invite grandparents, friends, neighbors, sponsors, whomever helped you throughout the 2006 season. We appreciate their hard work and dedication just as much as you do, and would love for them to come to the banquet.

Our Sponsors are our lifeline. Without our fantastic sponsors, CYRA would not be able to function as well as it does. With the start of the new season, it also means starting over. Visit your local shops and stores, tell them about our association. Invite our current and past sponsors to the banquet. Let them know how much we appreciate them. If you need a sponsorship form, let me know and I’ll get one to you. Sponsorship forms are also available from the website under the Sponsors tab.

Event Directors will be a new idea this year, for all CYRA rodeos! We will have 1 adult and 2 youth event directors for all CYRA events. Please contact Bailey Aiken for all of your information at:

or by phone at 913-837-2923. In the mean time, start thinking about volunteering to be an event director and which event you would like to be in charge of! A list of duties will be provided to each event director. Youth event directors are limited to Jr. and Sr. members only. Directors will be chosen on a first come first serve basis, so be sure to contact Bailey soon!!

Jeff Smith will be in charge of getting judges for our rodeos. If you or someone you know is interested in judging our CYRA rodeos this coming season, please contact him at: 913-256-4334.

A note from a board member:

Dear CYRA member, parents and friends,

As a relative new member of CYRA and a new director, I would like to take this opportunity to thank George Steinberger and the charter founders of CYRA. This association provides an opportunity for your rodeo enthusiasts that I never had. I didn't get that opportunity until I attended college at K-State. I first met George some years ago when my son attended his rodeo school, even though he chose not to pursue the sport. I gained a real appreciation for George and his set of values.

I also want to thank the post board and members who have put in a lot of work to expand the CYRA. I especially want to thank Jana Barcus for encouraging and suggesting that I bring Dawson Dreyer, my grandson, to participate in the mutton bustin' as Billy, her son had done. My acquaintance with Jana goes back to when she was just a young girl and she and her sister would come to my place to learn how to ride horses. She also would go with me to rodeos where I was contesting in the rough stock events. She was a horse enthusiast, but I thought it would change to boys as it does with a lot of girls as they get older. However, she didn't and wanted to buy a 2 year old gelding that I was breaking. I thought to myself, a city girl has no business with a green broke colt, but she detassled corn to get money to buy Brownie and really proved me wrong, as she trained that horse to do just about everything a horse could do. Her interest in horses and rodeo has not faded.

I also want to thank Rhonda Hoggatt for inviting Dawson to ride sheep at the American Royal last year, as well as this year. We didn't start rodeoing in 2006 until about mid-season and didn't have portable sleeping quarters so we would drive home after each performance. However, we purchased a 5th wheel trailer so we can stay overnight at the rodeos and be more involved in the rodeo as well as enjoy camping with our grandsons.

Again, I want to say thank you to everyone in the past who has helped to make CYRA a growing organization. It has provided a place for my grandson, Dawson, to start achieving. As we started going to rodeos, I started to get "rodeo fever" again, like I used to have when I was contesting. I look forward to the 2007 season and would like to get acquainted with each of you. If you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to tell me.

Thanks for the opportunity to be a CYRA board member,

Dave Slyter

The next member meeting will be November 8, 2006 at Edgerton City Hall at 7:00 p.m. in Edgerton, Ks. The meeting will actually be above City Hall. There is a white door just to the East of the City Hall doors. Once inside the door, go up the stairs to the meeting room. Hope to see you there!
